Transitional Fashion: Autumn/Winter style for 50+ women

November 18, 2022

This article was written for Annabel & Grace, which is now part of Rest Less.

Transitional fashion is super practical. You’ll always feel just right temperature-wise if you are able to peel something off or add another layer. Which, let’s face it, is pretty essential with the erratic weather we’re encountering lately.  21 degrees one minute, downpours the next. I’m also a fan of transitional fashion because, unlike Summer wear, Autumn/Winter clothes are far kinder to my various lumps and bumps!

So what are your best transitional wardrobe friends? One essential item has to be a roll neck jumper. Classically versatile, it looks great under a trench coat, blazer, sleeveless knitted vest or a dress. This best selling silky roll neck is the perfect weight and comes in no less than 32 different colours. £42

If you opt for neutrals, remember to vary the textures

Another winner, as I am sure you already know, is a crisp white shirt which works all year round.

Here are three options you might like. The cotton rich long sleeved shirt from M&S – a snip for £15. Or the very stylish Balloon Sleeve from Me+Em £165. If white is not your colour, check out the ivory Pure Silk shirt from Autograph £79.

An updated cardigan is always handy. I say updated because some designs can be less than flattering! These three youthful styles should do the trick. Wool wrap £69 from Cos and the cashmere crew neck cardigan (7 colours available) £98 with code Q8U5 from Boden. Or how about the Elle Supersoft longline cardigan £59 from Hush.

A few ideas on how to keep warm at home…

As I work from home and can’t afford to keep the central heating running all day, you’ll always find me wearing a Heatgen™ Thermal Body from M&S – keeps you warm and looking less lumpy! Then I add a crew neck tee under my jumper.

If it’s really nippy, I reach for a scarf. Either something along the lines of the Zoe Silk Satin Foulard Scarf from Liberty London which is currently reduced to £70 or the Ultra Fine Pure Wool scarf £32 from Not On The High Street. Both add some much-needed uplifting colour and warmth, whether worn inside the house or while I’m out getting some fresh air on a walk. Love fingerless mitts too – I can tap away on my keyboard and keep my fingers toasty at the same time. Have a look at Turtle Doves who sell recycled cashmere in a host of wonderful colours – their fingerless mitts are only £25 (usually £35) when you sign up for their newsletter.

Must give a shout out to FitFlop for their marvellously cosy suede Chrissie Shearling-Lined Suede Slippers – some colours currently on offer for a very reasonable £40. They are my feet’s best friends…

Gilets – wonderful things, perfect for slinging on when there’s a nip in the air. Another chance to add a bit of colour is this Taylor faux fur gilet from Cotton Traders for example.

And I love a poncho because you just sling it on and instantly look stylish. Everyone has to have at least one! Organic cotton cashmere pom pom poncho £69 from The White Company.

In between a puffa and a shirt is the shacket. Beaufort & Blake’s Eythorne Multi Check version for example £89. Gorgeous.

Don’t be shy about a shacket

Denim is seemingly always on trend and it’s easy to see why. Practical and seems to suit everyone, it looks pretty cool over a maxi dress. Or try wearing one over a chunky sweater, floaty maxi skirt and boots. Dark Indigo Crop denim jacket from Mint Velvet £99. And then add an oversized trench (buy at least one size up) – you’ll look super cool. Double Breasted Trench Coat with Recycled Polyester £59 from M&S.
