Course Description

This course will enable students to truly understand what phrasals and idiomatic expressions are all about - i.e. it will delve into the meaning component of phrasal verbs and idiomatic expressions beyond (a) the mere definition of phrasals as 'expressions made up of a verb and an adverbial particle' - which tells us nothing about how to understand, systematize and learn them - and (b) the mere definition of idiomatic expressions as 'set expressions' - which, again, says nothing about what they mean or how to learn them.

We wil here promote an approach based on metaphors, which we believe will enhance understanding of the real nature of phrasal verbs and idiomatic expressions and this, in turn, will get students to learn them in a systematic and meaningful fashion so that they can transpose what they have learnt to other learning contexts.

As a teacher of English, I graduated from ISP "Dr. Joaquín V. González", in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where I majored in English Language Teaching. In addition, I further specialized in Linguistics and Grammar. Currently, I am writing my Master's degree thesis in Discourse Analysis. More importantly, I am focusing my attention and energy on the creation of online courses for the teaching and learning of English as a Foreign Language.
