Job Title: Advanced Apprentice Shipwright

Location: Glasgow

Salary: Starting from £18,018 with annual progression through the scheme duration.

What you will be doing:

During the Steelwork Shipwright Apprenticeship, you'll be trained in a range of Steelwork processes, Fabrication and MMA stick welding to ensure you have the required skill to gain valuable knowledge in structural steelwork. You will gain experience in main alignment on major steelwork units as well as pre-fabricated seats using knowledge gained with marking out and a variety of tools and equipment such as thermal cutting and welding. You will also be trained in Overhead cranes, lifting aids such as chain blocks and Yale ratchet levers, MEWPS, Scheuerle Transporters including driving and banks man - this will enable you to gain experience in transportation and heavy lifting operations within Naval Ships. You will be involved in Tidal work and gain experience in Ship Docking, Ship Mooring and Ship Launching tasks.

Specific activities could include:

As a Shipwright you will be involved in a vastly experienced shipwright team, your main roles will be Transportation of ship units built in the fabrication shed to the Ship Block Outfit Hall (SBOH) - this is where the shipwright team will turn the specific units and erect to its position. You will follow a complex lift plan to ensure the safety of you and others around you.

Main Alignment - this consists of using levelling and positioning the unit to a high degree of accuracy working with dimensional control. You will use tools such as thermal cutting and welding, push-pulls and a selection of jack pumps.

Many roles also require higher levels of National Security Vetting where applicants must typically have 5 to 10 years of continuous residency in the UK depending on the vetting level required for the role, to allow for meaningful security vetting checks.

5 National 4s - Maths, English and Science or Technical Subjects required or equivalent (excluding Application of Maths).
