An experienced auditor is required to join the Defence Maritime Regulator to provide assurance of the Secretary of State for Defence, Health Safety and Environmental Protection Statement, for MOD Diving and Shipping activities.

This involves providing assurance that platforms and equipment are “safe to operate” and are then “operated safely”. The candidate will be expected to engage with the regulated community to understand the risk picture across the domain.

DMR Shipping Inspectors are required to provide assurance against the Regulations in DSA002 for Safety and Environmental Protection. As an Inspector, this post is required to support audits and additionally provide the subject matter expertise on Safety and Environmental protection matter for their area of responsibility (AoR) as defined by the responsibilities.ResponsibilitiesPrimary Responsibilities:

Deliver against the DMR Audit programme;

Act as lead auditor and support Inspectorate audits as directed by the Principal Inspector Gather regulatory intelligence within the maritime domain to assist in the development of the audit programme;

Support the Principal Inspector in assuring the Defence Maritime Regulator that Duty Holders have in place safety systems as part of a safety and environmental management system that delivers the desired Regulatory outcome (DSA002) for: MOD Shipping Ships Warships

Make recommendations to DMR senior management team on subsequent courses of action.

Secondary Responsibilities:

Identify potential improvements in maritime safety and environmental protection, drawing on evidence from assurance of stakeholders, accident and incident investigations, trend analysis, benchmarking against other organisations and stakeholder feedback;

Support the development of DMR processes;

Promote the spread of good safety and environmental practices from other domains and organisations;

Provide advice and guidance on the interpretation of policy and general safety and environmental protection and provide advice to Accountable Persons and their departments (where this does not compromise the independence of the team).

Answer Parliamentary or Freedom of Information Act questions.

Investigate serious events as directed by the Maritime Regulator. Support other areas of the team where necessary.


Line management responsibility for 1 x Lt and 1 x C2 Inspectors.

Tasks: Provide assurance of maritime domain compliance for the AoR to DMR through the Principal Inspector;

Undertake Inspectorate activities in line with DMR processes as described in DMR SEMS, manuals and work instructions;

Maintain relationships and engage with stakeholders in order to develop and sustain a full understanding of the maritime domain.
