Job Description

The Senior Researchers primary duties include:

Researching and writing replies to official and public enquiries.

Providing research support to the official historians as and when required.

Overseeing the public enquiry service and the staff engaged on that work.

Working with the Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission to identify human remains uncovered from field graves as well as those previously buried as unknown.

Liaising with RAF Ceremonial Branch regarding use of military markings on civilian aircraft.

Liaising with Directorate Defence Communications regarding publications clearance.

Acting as Deputy Freedom of Information Act officer for the Branch.

Occasional outreach activities, including attending family history events to represent the MoD and provide advice to the public.

The post currently manages 6 staff (3 as LM, 3 as CSO).

Working pattern: 37 hours per week, Monday-Friday. There is potential for home working 1-2 days per week.ResponsibilitiesRequirements: A degree or similar in history or a related subject is a requirement, and a post-graduate qualification would be advantageous. A good standard of written English is a necessity.

Advantageous: Evidence of previous research work and publication is desirable, as is a demonstrable interest in RAF history. Knowledge or experience of working with the Freedom of Information Act would also be an advantage.
