Job summary
This post is part of the Chief Operating Officer Directorate. The purpose of the COO Directorate is to lead on operational performance and improvement for the South East Region including:
- monitoring performance against annual operating plans and constitutional standards
- delivering bespoke improvement support to systems via the virtual improvement hub to optimise their overall performance and reduce unwarranted clinical variation
- leading the co-ordination of regional operational planning and assurance
- supporting the delivery of effective and efficient use of resources across the health service
A key part of the COO Directorate is the Regional Data and Analytics team. This team works across all Directorates in the region, with individual responsibilities flexing according to regional priorities. The roles being recruited to, may cover any of the following areas: Primary Care, Public Health, Population Health and Community. However, the role may flex with business needs, potentially covering other programme areas such as urgent and emergency care or planned care.
Main duties of the job
As an Analytical Support Officer, you will work as part of a team delivering a high-quality data analytics service to regional colleagues. You will build upon existing technical skills in statistics, data management, business intelligence and analytics.
Example projects include:

supporting public health and primary care colleagues with regular reporting to help with monitoring and assurance of delivery

bespoke analysis to understand the true performance of the NHS and identify areas of good or poor performance.

developing new indicators tomonitor performance, this can involve working with policy leads, commissioners, providers, and other organisations to identify, create and test indicators.
The team is developing technical skills to build and share reproducible code and further enhance our suite of automated analytical products.
For this post, existing analytical skills in Python, R, SQL, Power BI, or similar technologies, are beneficial. The team has a strong learning culture so a passion for learning new skills along with enthusiasm to share knowledge and help other team members develop are particularly welcomed.

Colleagues with a contractual office base are expected to spend, on average, at least 40% of their time working in-person.

Job responsibilities
Analysts work with team members to deliver analytical requirements and work closely with key stakeholders. The successful candidate will gain valuable experience in project management as well as transferrable technical skills in extraction, interpretation and visualisation of data. Our staff have a team base in Premier House in Reading and Wellington House in London. However, individual bases are varied, and we operate with a flexible working policy with most of the team adopting a hybrid remote working approach. Team members are expected to work from an office 2 days a week (or 40% equivalent in-person), in line with organisational policies.

Qualifications
Essential
- Educated to degree level in relevant subject (such as Mathematics, Economics, Statistics, Operational Research or a related quantitative or analytical discipline) or significant equivalent proven experience.
Skills
Essential
- Technical skills in data management, business intelligence and analytics including data modelling, data visualisation (e.g., Tableau and power BI) and data blending (e.g., Alteryx and SSIS) along with other supporting tools (e.g. Microsoft BI stack)
- Ability to pull together comprehensive draft reports, data, and letters.
Desirable
- Experience in using a range of analytical software such as Python, R, Databricks and SQL.
