About the Job

  • To deliver a complex package of high quality healthcare including assessment, diagnosis, treatment and advice to patients with various needs including orthopaedics, care of the elderly, neurology. To provide expert advice, guidance and information to health and social care professionals, carers, and relatives. To deputise for the Lead Therapist as necessary.

What will be your main responsibilities?

  • To undertake a significant clinical caseload to a high professional standard, using specialist knowledge and skills from theoretical and practical experience.
  • To provide highly specialised assessment and treatment for patients with complex needs, and to provide expert advice, guidance and information to health and social care professionals, carers and relatives and other non-professionals.
  • To take a lead role in the advanced assessment and treatment of patients who may have diverse, chronic presentation and highly complex physical and psychological conditions; to develop and deliver an individualised treatment programme which will contribute to safe discharges and prevention of hospital admissions.
  • To undertake the comprehensive specialist assessment of patients, including those with a complex presentation, using investigative and analytical skills and standardised assessments where applicable.
  • To assess patient understanding of treatment proposals, gain valid informed consent and work within a legal framework with patients who lack capacity to consent to treatment.
  • To formulate and deliver an individual Occupational Therapy management and treatment programme, based on a sound knowledge of evidence based practice and treatment options; to use specialist assessment, clinical reasoning skills and knowledge of treatment techniques.
  • To carry out rehabilitation programmes with patients in conjunction with other members of the team to maximise patients functional ability in activities of daily living.
  • To be responsible for the supervision, education and assessment of junior staff, technical instructors and students.
  • To communicate with relevant medical and nursing staff, social workers, other health care professionals, patients, relatives, and carers.
  • To actively participate in Continuous Professional Development and departmental educational and training activities
  • To carry out accompanied home visits and unaccompanied access visits to assess the patients’ functioning in their own environment, and communicate with relatives and carers regarding further care and/or treatment at home
  • To participate in departmental audit and research as required
