8a Principal Clinical Scientist (Immunology)

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced, self- motivated individual to take on this challenging role within a dynamic team in our busy and progressive department. You must be a state-registered clinical scientist with substantial experience as a clinical scientist in an Immunology laboratory covering an extensive range of tests. We are looking for a candidate with FRCPath part 1 or someone who is actively working towards it.

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust is one of the largest acute hospital Trusts in England following a recent merger with Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust, serving the populations of Birmingham and Solihull. The Trust is composed of four main hospital sites; Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEHB), Heartlands Hospital, Good Hope Hospital and Solihull Hospital (HGS). The department offers a full diagnostic immunology service serving the large autoimmunity, allergy and immunodeficiency population of the region. The annual Immunology workload is 350,000 tests

The post holder will be expected to take a scientific lead in immunochemistry, autoimmunity and allergy sections as well as involvement in the quality management of the department. The post holder will also need to support the cellular laboratory which runs an extensive repertoire of immunophenotyping and functional cellular assays utilising both Aquios and Navios flow cytometers as well as an interferon gamma release assays service.

This is an excellent opportunity to develop your career as you would be expected to play a key role in further development and expansion of our existing services. Laboratory is led by a consultant immunologist and the team includes two principal clinical scientist (including this post), two senior clinical scientists, chief BMS, 3 senior BMS, 6 BMS with other support staff and an STP. The team works closely with the clinical Immunology team who include 5 consultants and 5 registrars across the two hospital sites. The department offers excellent support for progression toward FRCPath exams and development toward consultant level.

We are a UKAS and MHRA accredited medical laboratory and NCHSC accredited for training. We support Continuous Professional Development, encouragement is given to attend and participate in both internal and external lectures / seminars.
