Consultant in Old Age Psychiatry

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint consultants in Old Age Psychiatry to work within Mental Health Services for Older People, North Tyneside General Hospital. We are looking to recruit consultants on either a full time or part time basis and are willing to consider flexible work patterns.

The post-holder would be responsible for a sector older person’s CMHT which receives approximately 265 referrals per annum. The CMHT is multidisciplinary with dedicated nursing, occupational therapist, psychology and integrated social work team. The service has 5 consultant psychiatrists and 6 trainee doctors who work closely together. The position would suit a part time position although there is scope for full time working.

All parts of the service are based together within a newly developed old age psychiatry department in North Tyneside General Hospital promoting significant supportive relationships within the department . We perform well against National benchmarks (MSNAP accredited). The department is busy, dynamic and friendly, benefitting from separate services for liaison, care home residents and memory clinic. On-call is approximately 1 in 13, third on-call exclusively for Old Age Psychiatry. The consultant on call is supported always by on-site SPR. Consultant on call is from home and quiet.

There are opportunities for protected educational, research or special interest time available for those interested and with relevant skills. Being part of an acute trust there are also exciting new opportunities available to look at sessional work into medical teams eg Parkinson’s Disease Clinics or working into newly develop frailty services.

Essential:

  • Registered or eligible for registration as a specialist in old age psychiatry on the GMC Specialist Register
  • Approved under Section 12 (2) of the Mental Health Act (1983) or equivalent
  • Specialist Registrars may apply if within 6 months of CCT at date of interview
