St Raphael’s Hospice (SRH), has been working across Merton and Sutton for 33 years. The Hospice has been through a great deal of change in the last few years and is now entering a new, exciting phase as an Independent Hospice. The Congregation of the Daughters of the Cross of Liège, founded St Raphael’s in 1987 and have supported the hospice to achieve Independence on October 31st 2020 as stand-alone charity to continue to provide services across Merton and Sutton. Our clinical action plan has set out an innovative way of working to deliver high quality patient focused services, within our resources and capacity.

The Hospice provides a range of specialist palliative care services to our local community in Merton and Sutton, a population of just over 400,000. A dedicated staff of 135 (plus around 40 bank staff) is supported by over 600 volunteers, based at the Hospice site, our fund-raising office and our 11 retail sites around the boroughs.

We have14 beds and currently service between 8 and 10 beds. We admitted and cared for 225 patients in 2018-19 whilst our community team of fourteen nurses (including 11 WTE CNSs) assessed 1,047 new patients and carry an active caseload of around 300 patients. Other available resources include our Wellbeing Centre which provides day therapy, outpatient care, patient and family support, and our Psychosocial Team which provides bereavement and social work services, including chaplaincy support.

The current medical team consists of two consultants (1.4FTE) a Consultant (0.2 WTE), who supports Friday mornings and second on call, a locum consultant three days a week (0.6FTE) a specialty doctor (0.9FTE), a part time specialty doctor (0.2 WTE), an StR and a rotational GPVTS placement every three months. A Consultant from the palliative care team at the local acute Trust, supports a session on a Thursday morning. We are recruiting to increase our substantive consultant posts to 2.2/2.4 WTE to enhance our responsive, accessible and flexible service delivery. The post can be flexed to full time (10 PAs) or part time hours (0.8/0.6 WTE). We have successfully appointed two of the Consultant posts (0.6 WTE and 0.8 WTE) as outlined above and are now seeking a third consultant to consolidate this new team on either a full or flexible hours basis.
