Kettering General Hospital are currently recruiting for a Consultant Microbiologist for a full time position (1WTE) (10 PA).

As a Consultant Microbiologist you will join a team of 3 Consultant Microbiologists. The post holder will join the existing team in providing a comprehensive Clinical and Diagnostic Microbiology, Virology and Infection Control Service.

This is a great opportunity for a motivated and committed individual to contribute to the continued development of the Clinical Microbiology Service in KGH. We are looking for an enthusiastic, clinically orientated Microbiologist, who will work with the Head of Department, and the Infection control doctor (ICD) to continue building on achievements and lead the Service into the future. They will be, together with consultant colleagues, responsible for the provision of high quality comprehensive, efficient and cost-effective Microbiology and Infection Control Services to the Trust and other users of the Service.

Applicants are required to hold FRCPath or equivalent, be on the GMC Specialist Register (CCT in Microbiology or Microbiology and Infectious Diseases) or within 6 months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT at the time of interview. The post attracts 10 PAs and there is a 1 in 3 on-call commitment (1:3 per WTE)

Clinical scientists who have completed higher specialist scientific training will also be considered.

Main duties of the job

Principal Elements of The Post:

  • To support and develop clinical and laboratory services relating to Clinical Microbiology, Virology and Infection Prevention and Control to suit laboratory working hours during weekdays
  • To have excellent team-working skills with the abilities and professional attitude to work well in a multi-professional team.
  • To lead on Clinical liaison and development of protocols with Clinical Haematology
  • Opportunity to be Clinical Lead for newly developed cardiology, paediatric multi-disciplinary team (MDT)
  • To deal with day-to-day issues of Infection Control (alert organism surveillance) and deal with Infection control issues including outbreaks whilst on call
  • To support the general Microbiology laboratory
  • To participate in audit and teaching
  • To share in 1 in 3 on call rota for Microbiology and Infection Control at KGH
  • To participate as required in Royal College of Pathologists CPD
  • To contribute to undergraduate education, and the training of postgraduate trainees within the Trust with regards to Clinical Microbiology
  • To contribute to the research output and administration needs of the department

About us

KGH is affiliated Teaching Hospital to Leicester University and the post holder will be expected to participate in teaching programmes for Junior Doctors. The Microbiology Department has full UKAS accreditation. The laboratory provides a high-quality service, has a friendly team and is valued by local users; workload is approximately 290,000 specimens per annum, including Virology specimens.

Job responsibilities

A timetable of responsibilities will be subject to negotiation and mutual agreement with the successful applicant, in conjunction with Consultant Microbiologist colleague. The job plan will be reviewed at 3 months. These duties may be subject to review to reflect the changing needs of the service. If changes to the described duties are required these will be mutually agreed between the appointee, consultant colleague(s) and the Trust.

Microbiologists do not work to rigid programmes, but a suggested weekly job plan/timetable is outlined below: The laboratory related clinical microbiology includes daily antibiotics ward rounds supported by antimicrobial pharmacist, daily ICU ward rounds and weekly Haematology and Neonatal ward rounds. Post holder is expected to contribute to weekly Isolation ward MDT which is supported by Infection Control Team and Gastroenterologist.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • MBBS, MB ChB or equivalent medical qualification
  • FRCPath Examination or equivalent qualification
  • Full Registration and a licence to practise with the General Medical Council (GMC)
  • Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) (the proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of the interview)
  • Entry on the General Medical Council (GMC) Specialist Register via other routes

Desirable

  • Diploma in Hospital Infection Control (or equivalent)
  • Higher degree (MD or PhD)

Knowledge/Experience

Essential

  • Knowledge and understanding of NHS microbiology laboratory practice
  • Experience in infection prevention and control
  • Ability to take responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision

Desirable

  • Research and development experience
