Drug and Alcohol specialist based within the psychological medicine service at Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading

Psychological Medicine Service is an established CORE 24 service as outlined by NHS England. The team is also accredited with the Royal College of Psychiatrists. The role of the drug and alcohol specialist within this service is to provide an assessment service to people who are referred that need specialist drug an alcohol expertise referrals, can be received either from the emergency department or the wards at Royal Berkshire Hospital.

The post holder will be responsible for the formulation, execution and evaluation of a care plan, including where indicated signposting to community drug and alcohol services. The post holder will ensure that each individual plan is developed in consultation/agreement with the service user and informed by the wider multidisciplinary team.

The post holder will report directly to the drug and alcohol lead within the service and together they will also be responsible for:

  • Training as needed to acute RBH colleagues
  • Formulating clear referral pathways to the service within the acute setting
  • Being available to give direct advice and support to RBH acute colleagues specifically for drug and alcohol
  • Working closely with third party stake holders in the community setting

The post holder will operate within a multidisciplinary team and will be responsible for the delivery of care, risk management and evaluation of care, emphasising individual service user’s recovery.

The post holder will be confident in taking positive risk in accordance with the Trust Policy around Risk Assessment and management.
