The Adult Emergency Department sees over 150,000 patients per year. The department serves the City of Coventry (population 325,000) but is also the receiving hospital for large parts of the midlands for major trauma cases and major incidents as part of the national trauma network. University Hospital, Coventry provides a number of tertiary services to an extended population and thus the ED receives a significant number of emergency admissions for sub-regional specialties; including interventional cardiology, stroke medicine, oncology, renal medicine and neurosurgery. The department has strong links with the local Primary Care Trusts and Ambulance Service and has developed innovative cross-sector initiatives to support admission avoidance and promote community care.

The Emergency Department is recognised regionally and nationally as outstanding in its commitment to and achievement in Emergency Medicine Education and training. The consultant team form faculty on a number of renowned courses. UHCW were awarded the RCEM Training Department of the Year Award in 2017 and were nominated for an HSJ award in 2018.

Main duties of the job

This appointment will be 8PA's with 1.5 PA's of core CPD with a further 0.5PA's of portfolio (SPA) 6 Pas of Direct Clinical Care activities (DCC) will be used flexibly working in ED in Coventry. You will be part of the Consultant full shift cover, providing shop-floor consultant presence 17 hours everyday, and resident on-call cover (making up the remainder of the PA balance). Work is divided into 4hrs/PA in hours and 3hrs/PA out of hours. Night shifts are resident on call with the consultant present on the shop floor until 01:00 and from then on resident in the on call room. Night shifts are valued at a premium tariff with a shift being a minimum of 4 PA's.
