Staff Nurse (MCSI)

Band 5 –£24,907 to £30,615 pa pro rata

Full time, 37.5 hours per week, permanent contract

At the Midland Centre for Spinal Injuries (MCSI), we are excited to offer nursing positions for newly qualified and experienced nurses. We are committed to support new members of staff to ensure they feel confident and enjoy working as part of our team. Presently we offer a six week supernumerary status for newly qualified nurses and at least two weeks supernumerary status for experienced nurses. This means that you will be given the time and support to build your confidence whilst learning how to care for spinal cord injury patients. Additionally, you will provided with a buddy on every shift during your supernumerary status to ensure you feel supported and welcomed as part of our team. Our Midland Centre for Spinal Injuries (MCSI) is one of 11 in the UK designated to receive and treat spinal cord injured patients. Our Centre is one of excellence and serves a catchment of 10 million from North Wales, Mid Wales, South Mersey, Cheshire and The West Midlands and provides a lifelong service to a current population of 3,500 patients. MCSI, which comprises of Gladstone Ward and Wrekin Ward, is led by Ward Manager Rebecca Warren. Rebecca won the Clinical Leadership Award at the Patient Safety Awards in 2015 which celebrates leaders who show clear commitment to patient safety and who have worked across clinical disciplines and collaborated with a range of colleagues. More recently two of our team have received awards by the Spinal Injuries Association; Nurse Consultant, Alison Lamb, was awarded the Healthcare Professional of the Year Award, and Service Manager, Lynne Morris, was awarded the Rising Star Medal. Our valuable team on MSCI have contributed to and supported these fantastic achievements.

MCSI boasts an award winning team of highly skilled healthcare professionals who work closely as part of a multidisciplinary team (MDT) to ensure the best quality outcomes for our patients. The team are very passionate and dedicated to providing care to Spinal Cord Injuries and you will be made to feel very much part of our MDT who display the values and behaviours of the Trust, working together to ensure one another is supported. Morale plays a key part in the delivery of care. Our team members regularly go the extra mile with events that benefit our patients and take every opportunity to celebrate the care they deliver with their patients. Our Centre is dedicated to the holistic management of our patients with spinal injuries, maximising neurological recovery and function. With this approach, our Centre aims to minimise complications and disability, and through follow up appointments after discharge, they continue to support and maintain health, independence and a good quality of life. Amongst the facilities available in MCSI we will see the development of Horatio’s Garden. Horatio’s Garden is a national charity that creates and cares for NHS spinal cord injury centres and the garden in Oswestry will be the fourth they have completed. Horatio’s Garden will offer a sanctuary for patients with spinal cord injuries, which will help them with their physical and psychological well-being. This is going to be an amazing facility for both our patients, families, and staff to enjoy, relax, participate in rehab, and importantly provides a tranquil rest and rehabilitation area.

To help you develop in your role, you will have full training and support and you will be given the opportunity to develop your clinical skills. We offer further development opportunities including completion of a Spinal Injuries modules and you will have an opportunity to network with other colleagues in Spinal Injury Centres. Each year we celebrate and share good practice and achievements in the Guttmann Conference. As a Trust there are other opportunities to be involved in our improvement champions, releasing potential leadership programmes, and a Reservist Challenge facilitated by 202 (Midlands) Field Hospital to enhance team building skills.
