Haematology & Blood Transfusion (Blood Sciences)

Specialist Biomedical Scientist (Band 6) – Haematology & Blood Transfusion

This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the largest NHS Trusts in the UK and join a UKAS ISO15189 accredited Pathology service provider which is both forward thinking and innovative in its approach.

The Pathology service operates a Hub and Essential Services laboratory (ESL) model. Direct access and specialist haematology testing is centralised at the Hub whilst crucial diagnostic testing matched to local service needs are strategically performed at ESL laboratories. The Hub is situated at the Royal London Hospital (RLH) in Whitechapel and ESL laboratories are located at St. Bartholomew Hospital (SBH) in the City of London, Newham University Hospital (NUH) near Plaistow and Whipps Cross Hospital (WCH) in Leytonstone.

All laboratories are equipped with Sysmex XN (Haematology) and Sysmex CS (Coagulation) systems with an automated haematology track solution also integrated at the RLH Hub laboratory. All laboratories are equipped with Bio-rad IH-500 Blood Transfusion analysers which support the largest blood transfusion department in the UK.

The Specialist Haematology section at RLH is equipped with Bio-rad Variant II and Capillarys (Sebia) systems whilst the Specialist Haemostasis section offers an extensive testing repertoire to support the respective Comprehensive Care Centres within Barts Health for haemophilia, sickle cell anaemia, thalassaemia and paediatric haematology.

We are looking for a strong team player with a positive attitude to working in a flexible manner, committed to supporting the clinical services of the Trust and meeting the needs of our patients by participating in an Agenda for Change shift system.

The successful candidate will be expected to predominantly participate in the night shift rota but may also be expected to work shifts that support 24/7 service provision across the Barts Health sites.

The successful candidate MUST be registered with the HCPC as a Biomedical Scientist and have completed the IBMS Specialist Diploma.
