We’re broadening our horizons are you?

It’s an exciting time to be involved with Technology at William Hill. We’re a global betting and gaming company, growing into new markets all the time. We wouldn’t be able to do this without a talented technology team and that’s where you come in. There’s a lot going on #behindthebet.

About us

We make a huge investment in everyone, offering great career development opportunities. Our people are at the heart of everything we do and we offer a fast-paced environment where we have fun, celebrate success and give you all the tools you’ll need to be your best self. It’s not just our colleagues we look after we’ve got a responsibility to our customers too and we work hard on our ambition that nobody is harmed by gambling.

Your role in the team

Working as part of the William Hill US Product Development team and driving our exciting US business and technology expansion with potential future opportunities in the US you’ll be a key member of our delivery focused software development team. Delivering high quality, high performance, fault tolerant micro-services you’ll support a range of exciting sports betting customer features. The services are written in Java, JavaScript (node.js), Scala and Python depending on their purpose and operating environment.

Here, you’ll push the boundaries of how we approach software development by moving our software development structure to be vertically aligned and feature driven. Contributing to and improving the software development life cycle (SDLC) within the team you’ll help establish and promote an “internal open-source” development model to enable William Hill’s development teams to grow and thrive in a more feature driven way.

Working in the exciting and dynamic growth business of US Sports Betting with a focus on Retail technology (Kiosks, EPOS and Omni-channel features) you’ll be building the next generation of sports betting technology to drive William Hill’s US expansion plans. Here you’ll collaborate with QA to ensure the highest quality of software is delivered. You’ll also own the CI/CD improvements with the DevOps engineers to continuously deliver high quality software daily. Additionally, you’ll support the software and services you build through ensuring the quality of the delivery and you’ll always be prepared to help support when things go wrong.

Skills Needed

You’ll have a strong background in backend development, with extensive experience writing clean, maintainable and high-quality code in the latest versions of Java and Python. You’ll be comfortable with messaging technologies like Kafka and will understand functional programming paradigm and it’s benefits. Additionally, you’ll be comfortable with automated software testing through unit/functional/integration test suites.

Ideally, you’ll also have experience with Micro-service based architecture, AWS, Spring Boot, Kafka, SQL/no SQL, Docker with exposure to Agile delivery principles and practices. Experience writing JavaScript or Scala would be beneficial as would any experience in writing code which interfaces with physical hardware.

What We Offer

We take the safety and wellbeing of our employees seriously, especially at this challenging time. We have put in place robust Covid19 measures and are supporting our new employees with a smooth remote onboarding and training programme to make you feel welcome and part of our team.

We will soon be able to welcome our teams back to the office, however, we want to offer a balanced approach to office and home working - now and for the long-term future. We know that not everyone is the same, many people have embraced home working, whilst others can’t wait to get back. Therefore, we are offering our employees the opportunity to work from home up to 80% of the time with 20% of office time built in to ensure we get some face to face collaborative team time - and the chance for a coffee and a catch up.

William Hill in Leeds

Right in the middle of the creative heart of the UK sit both of our Leeds offices. Leeds itself is a buzzy, busy place to work and live. A hub for tech, digital and gaming companies there’s also five universities right on our doorstep. And away from work, we’re in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales and of course have got a competitive sports scene with Leeds United and Yorkshire Cricket and Rugby just up the road in Headingly.
