The Happy Pear

After 40 years of cooking I have had to completely re-educate myself as most of my family have turned vegetarian. A great girlfriend, who is godmother to my youngest son, recognised and appreciated my dilemma and very kindly sent me the cookery book, The Happy Pear, which is written by twin brothers, David and Stephen Flynn. The Flynn brothers want to inspire us to eat more veg. It is now an established fact that eating more veg is best for us and it does the planet the least harm.

When you see the picture of these two boys you will see that they look like the least likely people to become champions of plant-based eating. The Flynn brothers are Irish and so grew up eating anything that was put in front of them. The loved to barbecue which, as they called it, was a total meat-fest. As teenagers they “played rugby, chased girls and drank like fish and hadn’t a care in the world other than stumbling through exams.” It was only when preparing for a marathon that they did some research and changed their diet, ate porridge for breakfast, swapped white bread for brown and gave up drinking. They sailed through the Dublin City Marathon and so their journey to healthy eating began.  After a period of time living on separate continents searching for good health through food they came back together in their home town and bought the local greengrocer’s shop and so their food revolution began.

Being young they wanted to make eating fruit and veg sexy! Whilst their friends have become suit-wearing executives they believe they are living the dream. Their perspective had changed and they really are doing something that they love. They have moved on from their first greengrocer’s shop and a clapped out van. Their main shop and café is on Church Road in Greystones, a seaside town in County Wicklow, Ireland. They have a second café in Shoreline Leisure Centre (also in Greystones), an online shop and an online Happy Heart course and cooking demos.

So whilst they freely admit that they are nowhere near becoming millionaires, their teenage dream, however they are rich with life, family, friends and good food!
