If you haven’t already checked it out, Rest Less Events is our virtual community and events platform. All sessions are run via Zoom and cover a vast range of topics.

With around 100 monthly events, you’ll hopefully find something to pique your interest. Alongside our regular sessions, there’s plenty more to discover this month – from time-travelling history talks to unique art classes.

Here are some of the most exciting events coming up in July.

1. A Voyage to the Galapagos Islands

When? Thursday 24th at 4:00pm

Brought to you by Celebrity Cruises, this event is all about expedition cruising around the Galapagos Islands – famous for its stunning scenery and wondrous wildlife, which inspired Darwin’s theory of natural selection.

Throughout the session, host Leon Hand, Training Manager at Celebrity Cruises, will also share stories and insights from his travels in the region, plus tips on how to best explore the islands.

2. Journaling and Creative Writing for Wellbeing

When? Tuesdays 1st, 15th, and 29th at 2:30pm

This new group meets every second Tuesday for half an hour to explore journaling and creative writing for wellness.

The sessions are designed to help participants connect with their thoughts and feelings, and find meaning and direction – whether that’s by recovering old memories or exploring life goals.

3. Irving Berlin, Doin’ What Came Natur’lly!

When? Tuesday 1st at 4:00pm

Famous for songs like ‘White Christmas’ and ‘Puttin’ On the Ritz’, composer Irving Berlin was a titanic figure in the evolution of popular American music. So much so that broadcaster Walter Cronkite once said that he “helped write the story of [the U.S.A], capturing the best of who we are and the dreams that shape our lives.”

In this presentation from host Judy Karbritz, we’ll hear some of Berlin’s most famous tunes – many of which grace the pages of the Great American Songbook – and gain some insights into his life.

4. Lunch Club

When? Wednesdays at 1:00pm

This welcoming, weekly virtual gathering offers a space for engaging conversations and meaningful connections. Join and take time to chat with interesting people around the world over lunch.

One Rest Less Events member says about Lunch Club, “I feel like I’m meeting up with friends. Great range of topics of conversation.”

5. The Life And Times of Erik Satie

When? Wednesday 2nd at 7:00pm

Cardiff Philharmonic Orchestra viola player Claire returns to Rest Less Events with another look into a fascinating figure from musical history. This time, it’s Erik Satie, known for calming compositions like Gymnopédies and Gnossiennes.

This event covers all aspects of Satie’s life – from his peculiar eating habits to the strange performance directions in some of his scores.

6. An Introduction to Singing

When? Thursday 3rd at 11:30am

Pianist, singer, and composer Lorna Poole says anyone can learn to sing. That’s why she’s bringing this introductory class to Rest Less Events.

Participants can expect to walk away with a deeper understanding of the mechanics of singing, the connection between breath and voice, and what type of voice they might have. Lorna will also lead some simple singing exercises and advise on how to keep your vocal cords in the best condition possible.

7. The Greatest Archaeological Discoveries in Peru

When? Thursdays 3rd, 10th, and 17th at 4:00pm

From the breathtaking mountain-top citadel of Machu Picchu to the mysterious Nazca Lines, massive drawings etched into arid plains in the country’s south, Peru isn’t short of interesting archaeological discoveries.

In this series, Vanessa Vasquez, an experienced tour guide and cultural ambassador from Lima, Peru, will introduce us to three of the most fascinating.

8. Aerobic Fitness

When? Fridays at 9:00am

Aerobics is an upbeat and dynamic way to stay fit and have fun. And with this event from qualified personal trainer Trinity Hadley, you can reap all the benefits from the comfort of your home.

With a mix of cardio, strength-based exercises, and traditional aerobics movements, this weekly session is designed to get your blood pumping. A perfect way to start your Friday!

9. Marvels of Seville

When? Friday 4th at 4:00pm

Join Jamile Lawand, an expert in Spanish literature and culture, for this virtual tour of Seville.

From its iconic Flamenco dancing and fantastic festivals to its Moorish architecture and flavourful Andalusian cuisine, there’s plenty to discover in this jewel of Southern Spain.

10. A Summer Feast of Poetry

When? Saturdays at 3:00pm

This summer, Dr Simon Gregor brings some of the world’s finest poetry to life with these four Saturday sessions. Each one will feature around a dozen poems from different writers and eras.

As well as reading each aloud, Simon will introduce us to the people behind the verses and some historical context to enrich our understanding.

11. Dutch East India Company and a Man from Kent

When? Monday 7th at 4:00pm

In this talk, host Sandy tells the story of the man from Kent who sailed with Dutch ships to Japan in the 16th Century. Here, he became a close confidant of the future shogun and helped establish a trading post for the East India Company.

12. Thomas Hardy – The Man, His Works, and His Wessex

When? Tuesday 8th at 11:30am

In this presentation, described by Rest Less Events members as “excellent”, “absorbing”, and “very entertaining”, qualified lecturer Margaret dives into the life and works of one of England’s best-loved novelists: Thomas Hardy.

Peeking behind the veil of this deeply private man’s life, we’ll explore his love of nature, his opinions on the industrialisation of his day, and his capacity to speak out and argue for change.

13. The Shipping Forecast

When? Tuesday 8th at 4:00pm

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Shipping Forecast, the iconic BBC report of the weather in the seas around the British Isles.

Join host Martin to discover the history of this UK institution, which the Royal Museums Greenwich calls “as beloved and familiar to the British public as fish and chips or the chimes of Big Ben.”

14. In the Style of Van Gogh

When? Wednesdays 9th-30th at 9:30am

This four-part workshop from Caitlin, founder of Barely Drawing, teaches participants how to draw in the style of the iconic Impressionist Vincent van Gogh.

15. 30-Minute Mindfulness Meditation

When? Thursdays at 9:00am

Give yourself the best possible start to your Thursdays with this 30-minute mindfulness meditation session.

Designed to bring balance, calm, and clarity to your morning – and give you some precious ‘me-time’ – this event is perfect for seasoned practitioners and newbies alike.

16. Baroque Masters

When? Thursdays from 10th at 7:30pm

This new four-part series from historian Dr Lillian Cespedes Gonzalez introduces us to some of the master artists of the 17th-century Baroque style.

From Caravaggio to Rembrandt, we’ll learn about their lives, revolutionary approaches, and most iconic and enduring masterpieces.

17. The Fishing Fleet – Husband Hunting in India and Ceylon

When? Tuesday 15th at 4:00pm

From the late 19th century, when British rule in India was at its peak, many young men travelled to India and Sri Lanka to work as soldiers, businessmen, and administrators, leaving a lack of eligible bachelors in Britain.

During this time, young, single women set off in their footsteps to find husbands. In this event, host Sandy introduces us to their stories.

18. Move for Life

When? Wednesdays at 8:30am

Previously known as ‘Dance for Life’, this weekly exercise class focuses on balance, mobility, and movement to music to keep you feeling strong and steady.

Blending dance-inspired movement with flexibility and strength-building exercises, it aims to help you improve coordination, stability, and overall wellbeing.

19. Tower of London and the Crown Jewels

When? Thursday 17th at 11:30am

Blue Badge tour guide Sue leads us on a fascinating journey through the Tower of London’s rich and chilling past.

We’ll learn about the Tower’s regal beginnings, its infamous tales of imprisonment and intrigue, and the lasting impact of the Norman Conquest on British culture. We can also marvel at the Crown Jewels, without the typically long queues and pricey admission fees.

20. Spin the Sixties

When? Friday 18th at 4:00pm

Rest Less Events’ resident music maestro Clive takes us on a time-travelling journey through the grooviest decade of all: the 60s.

In this ‘Spin the Wheel’ type event, we’ll hear and learn about some of the top hits of the era at random. And, of course, Clive will share plenty of interesting facts along the way.

21. Iron, Steam, and Shadows: Industry and Society in the Victorian Age

When? Tuesdays from the 22nd at 11:30am

In this four-part series, Dr Richard Marks takes us on a time-travelling tour of the Victorian Age.

From looking at the factories of the era to exploring how trailblazing engineers united Britain with railroads, we’ll gain some fascinating insights about what it was like to be part of the Industrial Revolution. We’ll also hear what leisure activities Victorians enjoyed and explore whether the working class really did live in the kind of poverty depicted in popular media.

22. Julie Andrews

When? Tuesday 22nd at 4:00pm

From classic musicals like Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music to more recent appearances in The Princess Diaries and Despicable Me, Julie Andrews’ career has spanned nearly 80 years. Along the way, she’s collected a host of accolades, including an Academy Award and seven Golden Globes.

In this talk, entertainment expert Steve Short looks back over Andrews’ life and works.

23. Get the Glow – Mastering Your Skin and Hair Through the Menopause Transition

When? Tuesday 22nd at 7:30pm

Menopause can affect how your hair and skin look and feel, but there are various ways to combat negative symptoms.

Join Harley Street dermatologists Dr Mia Steyn and Dr Rishika Sinha, from the Dr Sam Bunting + Associates clinic, for this free webinar. They’ll be discussing all things related to hair and skin during menopause, including lifestyle factors that can enhance your natural radiance, how to find the perfect skincare routine, and more.

24. Short Story Club

When? Friday 25th at 12:00pm

Whether you love reading and discussing literature but don’t have much time on your hands, or you’re particularly interested in short fiction, why not join us for Short Story Club?

Like a book club (only with less to read!), this monthly social event brings literature lovers together to talk about a short story (or two), including what we like about it, what we don’t, how it was crafted, and even some of the historical context surrounding it. There will also be a chance to nominate a story for upcoming sessions.

25. The Pre-Raphaelites

When? Fridays 25th of July and 1st of August at 2:30pm

The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood were a group of male painters who challenged the conventions of the Royal Academy in the 19th century, inspired by Italian art before the High Renaissance. While their movement lasted less than five years, they’ve left an enduring footprint on British art.

Alongside them were the Pre-Raphaelite sisterhood, the women of the movement who were both muses and multi-talented artists in their own right. This two-part talk from professional fine art photographer Janine Kilroe explores these two influential groups.
