Work as a GrandNanny

Introduction to GrandNanny

GrandNanny is a new social enterprise, passionate about providing meaningful employment for the over 50s and helping families find part-time childcare.

We offer a new way to find local childcare by matching families with experienced, reliable people. We value the years of knowledge our GrandNannies bring. Now families can tap into this local network, creating a rewarding relationship for both.

Our GrandNannies have an urge to use the wealth of skills and experience that they’ve built up over the years raising their own families and/or working with children.

Why not turn your love of children into a rewarding job by finding a connection with a friendly local family looking for childcare help. Share your life experience with them and feel valued.

Why we’re working with Rest Less

Like any age demographic, ‘over 50s’ is a homogenous label for a really heterogeneous group, but we view the 50s labour force as incredibly knowledgeable, powerful and capable.

‘I realised that we have this childcare crisis going on and at the same time hundreds of thousands of older adults who, just like everyone else, want to contribute their skills and feel valuable. So making it possible for more people to find work in the Childcare Sector in their 50s and 60s seemed like an obvious way to create a win-win situation.’ Adele Aitchison, GrandNanny Founder & CEO

Of course qualifications are valuable but so too is 20 years in the field as a Teaching Assistant or 30 years raising a family and grandchildren. We value the transferable and soft skills that personal or professional childcare experience brings.

Real-life stories

Changing your career track or transferring to a new company needn’t be daunting. We asked some of our valued team of carers to tell us about their experiences of working as a GrandNanny. We hope they inspire you too.

Laura's story

Laura, a mother and a former primary school Teaching Assistant, has always been passionate about childcare. Her extensive personal and professional experience looking after children inspired her decision to turn her hand towards working as a GrandNanny.

We first came into contact with Laura through the JobCentre, where she attended a workshop. At that point she had been out of employment for a while and felt she was experiencing ageism whilst trying to find a new role.

“My favourite thing about GrandNanny is that it allows me to work locally…they connected me with a family that is located within my neighbourhood, which makes getting around a lot easier. Flexibility is a really big component that is unique to GrandNanny, and it wasn’t accessible in my past jobs.

“The whole GrandNanny team are genuinely helpful and good willed. GrandNanny goes out of their way to place their nannies with families that are suitable for them, which makes a very big difference in childcare…GrandNanny is different in the sense that they are incredibly considerate of your needs, are easy to approach and are there to support you throughout the entire onboarding process. The GrandNanny team made me feel like I was joining their community, rather than a business.”

Constance's story

“The whole employment process is very helpful. From the starting point of the application, the training and admin, I found GrandNanny very supportive. More so the great effort GrandNanny goes to, to find the right family for their GrandNannies. I will not hesitate to recommend GrandNanny to anyone looking to work with children.”
