Fundraising roles for charities are by far the most common way to volunteer. Charities rely heavily on donations from the public and their very existence depends on them. Opportunities to help fundraising are vast and it is often up to you to choose how you wish to go about it and how much time and energy you are able to put into it.
Perhaps you want to be a street fundraiser, providing information and collecting donations from passers by, or maybe you want to take part in a personal challenge for sponsorship. You can also get together with your local community and host events such as coffee mornings, fetes and fun runs where all profits are donated to charity.
Personal challenges are great fun and can give you a real sense of achievement – you can choose any challenge that appeals to you. But, it’s best to choose something that takes you outside of your comfort zone – such as skydiving or walking a long distance – as these challenges are more likely to bring in donations and your personal satisfaction levels will be higher knowing you’ve personally worked hard to overcome your fears and abilities. There are also charities that hold regular community events such as Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life around the country.
You can take part alone, with a partner or in a group. Once you’ve chosen a charity and a challenge, you can easily set up a Just Giving page in a few minutes to collect sponsors, which will then be transferred to your chosen charity.
The best way to begin your fundraising journey is to choose a charity you are passionate about. This could be anything from Cancer Research UK to PDSA. You may have a personal experience that guides you towards a certain charity, or you may want to browse and find one that particularly inspires you. Below, we’ve pulled together a short list to get you started, but there are still hundreds of others you can choose to support.
