Exploring Switzerland by Train: Scenic Routes and Hidden Gems

Free event: 4pm, June 9th

Where can you…

  • Take a mountain cog railway to Europe’s highest train station 3,454 metres (over 11,200 feet) above sea level?
  • Have lunch in a mountain restaurant ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service?’
  • Watch cows parading down a high street adorned with flowers?
  • See commuters travelling home by floating down a river?

The answer is Switzerland: a country with world-famous scenic trains, a network of mountain cog railways, and a seamlessly interconnected travel system.

Why does this matter? Because it makes it easier to explore a country of lakes, mountains and alpine villages, get a sense of the history and regional culture, and try out the local food and wine. Train travel here is part of the experience, not simply a way of getting from A to B, and there are still plenty of hidden gems to discover along the way.

Join us as we take you by train to Switzerland, sharing personal stories, experiences and insight into some of its most scenic trains and lesser-known regions.

Meet the host, Simon Hodge

Simon is a huge rail travel enthusiast and has taken train journeys worldwide in [insert number] countries from Australia to Egypt, Thailand to Canada. He is most passionate about European rail though, and has travelled extensively by train around the whole continent.

Of all the places he’s visited, Switzerland remains his number one destination not just because of the amazing rail journeys you can take, but because of the amazing variety of scenery and experiences on offer in this modest sized, landlocked country.

Having worked in rail travel for many years, Simon founded Tailor Made Rail in 2014. He likes nothing better than a challenging brief from a customer so he can immerse himself in the logistics of planning their rail holiday, whether it’s to Switzerland or Uzbekistan.
