Omega-3. What Does It Do And Why Might We Need It?

This article was written for Annabel & Grace, which is now part of Rest Less.

We’ve all heard that Omega-3 is good for us. But what does Omega-3 do and why might we need it?

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fats that your body needs but cannot produce on its own. Most people who eat a standard Western diet are not eating enough Omega-3 fats – not even close. One of the most comprehensively studied nutrients on earth, Omega-3 fatty acids offer various benefits for your body and brain. Few nutrients have been studied as thoroughly as Omega-3 fatty acids. Benefits are said to include lessening depression/anxiety, helping prevent macular degeneration, reducing inflammation, reducing liver fat, keeping your skin healthy and helping to fight several autoimmune diseases including type 1 diabetes and Crohn’s. Some studies link a higher Omega-3 intake to a reduced risk of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

There are a range of foods that are very high in Omega-3: Mackerel and salmon (both incredibly rich in nutrients), herring, oysters, sardines, anchovies… which is great if you like fish. Plus flaxseeds, chia seeds, walnuts and soybeans (if you don’t). There are other foods including grass-fed meats, some eggs and spinach – but they don’t contain as much Omega-3.

If you don’t eat many of these foods, you can consider taking Omega-3 supplements.  When choosing one, make sure it contains EPA and DHA – the two most important elements. And check it also has an antioxidant to combat rancidity – fish oils are prone to going off (hard to tell when it is contained in a capsule). Krill oil naturally contains a potent antioxidant, as well as being more easily absorbed than standard fish oils. Krill live in the Antarctic and are a small shrimp like animal. They are considered to be a more sustainable choice than fish oil, because krill are so abundant and reproduce quickly. As they are very small and have a short lifespan, they don’t accumulate many contaminants during their lifetime. Therefore their oil doesn’t need to be purified. So that’s the supplement I’m going to concentrate on in this article.

I can vouch that the pills are easy to swallow – even without water – as they are quite small and there is no after taste (or that ghastly fish burping you can get with something like cod liver oil.) I also like the fact that the days of the week are printed on the back of each capsule pack – great for people like me who can’t remember if they’ve taken their pills!
