It all started when the founders, Tasha and Barney were travelling in Asia and stumbled across a very rudimentary fishing rope, made from unraveled plastic bottles, lids and all. The rope had been used to tether fishing boats. It was both strong and waterproof, and offered a moment of inspiration to the intrepid couple. Could they take some of the mountains of plastic waste that is polluting our seas and landfill and turn it into a useful and practical yarn?
Over 50 billion bottles are estimated to find their way into our seas and landfill each year. Weaver Green takes some of these waste plastic bottles and turns them into beautiful, machine washable, hardwearing and environmentally friendly rugs and home textiles. Each rug is made from up to 3000 recycled plastic bottles.
The Weaver Green range includes rugs, blankets, throws, cushions, dog beds, bags and footstools. They hand loom all their lovely textiles and use artisans throughout Europe, Scandinavia and Asia to make their gorgeous, soft, practical products. They take care to ensure that everyone involved in the process of turning a discarded plastic bottle into a beautiful herringbone rug or a Juno bag is treated fairly and paid accordingly. Their South East Asian and Turkish weavers are independently inspected to ensure the safe and fair working conditions of their craftsmen and women, while they finish all of their textiles in their Devon based rug rooms.
I spilt a mug of tea on my Weaver Green rug. I quickly put it in the washing machine at 30℃ and it came out as good as new. They must not be tumble dried. The dog beds look so much nicer than your average dog bed. They are so practical as they wash so easily.
