Job description
As a Higher Executive Officer (HEO) Mechanical Engineer, you will play a critical role within our specialist mechanical development team, delivering high-impact technical solutions at pace. You will be responsible for end-to-end design and development of operational hardware. These systems will be prototyped, manufactured and rigorously evaluated for operational use.
In this role, you will join a high-performing team delivering cutting-edge mechanical engineering solutions to support a specialist military user community. You will be embedded within a unique military organization, within the mechanical department and reporting to the Mechatronics Engineering lead. Your work will focus on solving complex tactical and operational challenges through the delivery of novel, deployable technologies that provide real-world impact.
The role demands critical thinking, creativity, and technical excellence. You will be expected to accurately capture requirements, design, develop, manufacture, test and deliver practical engineering systems, always in direct support of those operating at the front line. You should have experience of mechanical design using the latest CAD software packages, and development of prototypes utilising a variety of manufacturing methods. You will engage directly with operational user, understand the needs of the user and the relevance of any capability, showing consideration for material and process selection. You will produce technical reports, design documentation, drawings, prototypes and end use products. You are to maintain up to date knowledge of emerging technology in your discipline through continued professional development.
Your responsibilities will include handling sensitive and classified information with discretion, contributing technical insight to mission planning and analysis, and ensuring that every solution developed is informed by real operational context. Youll be a technical leader and a trusted advisor, expected to manage project direction while remaining personally involved in engineering delivery.
To be successful, youll hold an Ofqual Level 6 qualification (or equivalent) with 2 years experience or Level 4 qualification with a minimum of 5 years experience in mechanical engineering, or a related field. You will bring substantial experience across a range of technical domains, including mechanical design, material science, prototype manufacturing and production. Above all, you must be comfortable working in a hands-on rolethis is an on-site, hands-on role which will require designing, production, assembly and testing, all while effectively communicating with the end-user.

The post requires a dynamic, enthusiastic, and multi-talented individual, with extensive experience across a broad range of engineering and scientific subjects.
Essential skills and experience:
Confident in the use of engineering design software with a minimum of 2 years experience in an engineering environment conducting design and production outputs.
Proven ability to deliver innovative solutions to complex problems utilising a mix of materials and processes.
Good communication skills, both written and oral, and be able to interact with a diverse range of people from non-technical users and senior stakeholders to experts in a wide variety of technical fields.
Confidence to tackle engineering problems across a broad spectrum of technologies, supported using relevant literature, and knowing when and where to external seek advice and expertise to support decision making.
Highly motivated, with an ability to work well under pressure and time constraints.
Ability to make clear and decisive decisions based on evidence and defend them robustly when required.
Mandatory Licences and Qualifications:
- Full UK Cat B driving licence due to the location - there is no public transport to the site.
- Ofqual Level 6 qualification (or equivalent) with 2 year experience or Level 4 qualification (or equivalent) with a minimum of 5 years experience in mechanical engineering, or a related field.
