As the authority for the Royal Navys nuclear submarine capability, the Submarine Directorate oversees one of the most complex and critical elements of UK defence. Covering everything from in‑service management to long‑term fleet modernisation, the directorate ensures the Submarine Flotilla remains safe, reliable, and ready to meet national security requirements.

You'll be based at HMNB Devonport, the largest naval base in Western Europe and a powerhouse of Royal Navy capability. It is home to amphibious ships, survey squadrons, submarines, and two-thirds of the frigate force. With its unique nuclear refitting facility, Devonport ensures the Fleet remains ready to support operations worldwide.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Are you ready to take an engineering role at the forefront of nuclear safety, driving maintenance strategy and ensuring the integrity of critical infrastructure?

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Maintenance & Governance Engineer to join a specialist technical governance team at HMNB Devonport. This unique role offers the opportunity to influence maintenance doctrine, assure nuclear safety compliance, and play a key role in the oversight of Nuclear Safety Related (NSR) assets within a complex, high-hazard environment.

What Youll be doing

  • Set and lead nuclear maintenance doctrine, driving improvements in maintenance methodology and engineering processes.
  • Develop, own and update EIMT schedules, ensuring all NSR assets meet Safety Functional Requirements and Safety Case commitments.
  • Control release and return‑to‑service of NSR equipment after maintenance.
  • Assess maintenance issues and survey findings, directing corrective actions and engaging Design Managers where required.
  • Plan and oversee maintenance programmes, ensuring NSR assets are inspected and maintained to the required standard.
  • Chair the Job Plan Review Board, validating nuclear‑implicated job plans and assuring technical quality for key stakeholders.
  • Lead design change control, ensuring modifications uphold Safety Case claims and are delivered correctly and on time.
  • Provide specialist nuclear engineering advice to the Nuclear Engineering Safety Committee.
  • Act as Intelligent Customer for the Maintenance Management System, ensuring robust governance of all NSR maintenance activity.
  • Deputise for the Engineering Head, influencing nuclear governance and engineering assurance at senior level.

Person specification

  • Devonport Naval Base site familiarity and knowledge, or similar industry level such as in a high hazard industry or marine environment.
  • Hold a Level 4 qualification (or higher) in an Engineering or Science discipline, or have the equivalent relevant experience.
  • Accredited to Incorporated Engineer (IEng) level or equivalent (or the ability to achieve within 2 years.)
  • Proven ability to lead technical assurance activities and influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • Excellent analytical, organisational, and communication skills, with a strong commitment to safety and compliance.

Essential:

  • Hold a membership of an Engineering Institution (associate or above) with an appropriate professional institute.
