Job description

What does the role involve?

As a Part Qualified Actuary, you will be a key member of one of GADs teams, supporting actuaries across all aspects of actuarial work.

You will work in one of the following teams:

Analytical Solutions: GADs central hub of analytical expertise, supporting client-facing teams with high-quality analysis and advice across insurance, investment, pensions and risk. Work includes funded and unfunded pensions, social security, bespoke analysis and model building for government. The team applies actuarial and modern data science techniques to help government manage risks affecting the UK, and drives innovation through new tools and techniques.

Pensions & Provisions: Advises clients on managing the countrys largest liabilities, including government commitments to unfunded schemes and funded schemes under the Pensions Act 2004. The team serves as Scheme Actuary for schemes linked to the public sector, advises on the strategic use of pensions and total reward, supports the management and actuarial oversight of major public sector risk pools, and facilitates the treatment of pensions on compulsory staff transfers.

Policy & Assurance: Integrates policy advice and assurance across GADs clients. The team helps UK and overseas governments manage the near- and long-term financing of social security funds, including GADs annual report on the National Insurance Fund. It advises on insurance-type solutions to market failure, climate-related risks and opportunities, and financial, credit and investment risk across the public sector, and provides assurance on complex models used in key areas of government policy.

Your team placement will reflect GADs business needs and your work experience to date. You may rotate through different teams during your career to develop your skills and support business needs.

You will contribute to work across several clients, agreeing budgets, priorities and deliverables. This involves communicating with a range of stakeholders and actively liaising with colleagues to ensure a consistent approach where appropriate.

You will proactively develop other team members as part of day-to-day work and may have line management responsibilities. You may also have a wider remit to develop specific areas of interest beyond immediate client requirements.

Person specification

  1. Client management: Develop an excellent understanding of GADs clients, their needs and how GAD can support them through advice and analysis.
  2. Quality assurance: Ensure the accuracy and reliability of analysis and draft advice provided to the actuary.
  3. Project management: Effectively manage your work and that of colleagues, ensuring advice is delivered to budget and within deadlines.
  4. Communication: Support actuaries in drafting client communications, attending client meetings and presenting to clients and other stakeholders.
  5. Development of people: Proactively develop colleagues through on-the-job training and support, and undertake line management where opportunities are available.

Your responsibilities will vary depending on the team in which you are placed.
