Job summary
The Civilian Medical Practitioner (CMP) plays a critical role within the Department of Occupational Medicine, undertaking medical examinations and providing expert clinical judgement on candidate medical fitness for service or aviation duties in accordance with JSP 950 and AP1269A. The post holder advises contractor staff, supports the candidate appeals process, contributes to ministerial correspondence, and provides medical risk advice on candidates who may require executive waivers. The CMP also contributes to service and policy improvement initiatives and supports the wider objectives of RAF Recruitment & Selection.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.
Job description
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake Tri-Service Initial Aviation Medical Examinations to make decisions on medical fitness for safety critical aircrew and aircraft controller roles, taking into account the air safety standards published in AP1269A.
- Remote initial certification of candidates and serving personnel employed in air safety critical roles through the review of medical records provided by the Contractor, military medical officers and civilian medical practitioners.
- Provide remote occupational assessments of medical fitness to continue in military training.
- Provide advice to the Contractor staff on the Medical Fitness of candidates referred by them.
- Provide timely responses to candidate appeals relating to medical fitness decisions.
- Contributing to the medical elements of responses to ministerial correspondence.
- Provide advice to the Executive on medical risks for candidates who do not meet standard entry requirements but may be considered for an executive waiver.
- Contribute to service and policy improvement initiatives across the Department of Occupational Medicine.

This is a Fixed-term Appointment as a Civilian Medical Practitioner in the Department of Occupational Medicine. Your responsibilities will be as described in this job advert. The reason why you are appointed for a fixed period is due (Insert reason for FTA). This post will therefore begin on your appointment and end 23 months after that date. You should be aware that when your Fixed-term Appointment at MOD comes to an end, arrangements will be made in line with the FTA policy.
If you are a permanent MOD civil servant and are found successful for an advertised Fixed-term Appointment (FTA) you should move into the post under a Temporary Transfer (for up to a maximum of 3 years). At the end of the posting, you will return to your previous MOD Business area. If this posting is at a higher grade, your promotion will be temporary, and you will return to your substantive grade at the end of the Temporary Transfer. If a Temporary Transfer cannot be agreed between all parties, then a transfer on an FTA contract is possible, read the FTA and Change of Work Location in the UK policy for further information.
If you are transferring to MOD from another government department (OGD) you should join the MoD on an inward loan. At the end of the loan, you will return to your home (OGD) department. Person specification
Experience
- Appropriate clinical experience to provide medical oversight and decision making.
- A proven ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
- Experience contributing to medical assessments, appeals, risk evaluations, and ministerial correspondence.
Qualifications
Essential:
- Registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) on the main register and on the GMC GP Register without restrictions.
- Current licence to practise.
- A current, satisfactory in date annual appraisal in line with the requirements of the General Medical Councils (GMCs) Good Medical Practice (GMP).
- Proof of GMC validation and revalidation must be presented at interview.
- All qualifications/licenses must be valid and in date at the point of application.
- Equivalent qualifications are not accepted.
Desirable:
- Previous Ministry of Defence (MOD) experience.
- RAF Military Aviation Medicine Examiner (MAME) Course.
- Diploma in Aviation Medicine.
- Diploma in Occupational Medicine.

- Reliable and consistently sound professional clinical judgement.
- Good people skills, including the ability to form strong working relationships with the existing Service Entry Medical Department, military, and non-military partners.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated capability to work collaboratively within teams.
