Job description
DSIT's Digital Infrastructure Directorate works to ensure that the UK has the mobile and broadband networks and supporting infrastructure now and into the future. Working as part of the Technology, Spectrum and Strategy team (TSS) you will focus on the future-facing aspects of that ambition, helping to create a globally competitive UK ecosystem for Advanced Connectivity Technologies (ACT) that strengthens technical sovereignty and ensures that our future networks are secure, modern and resilient.
This stretching role sits in the team responsible for DSIT policy toward the emerging sixth generation of mobile technology - 6G - and the department's participation in the negotiations shaping those future networks. Working with officials, technical experts and security professionals from across Government and its agencies, you will direct the department's engagement in global negotiations and participate directly to progress the ambitions set out in the Modern Industrial Strategy.
There is significant cross-Government interest in this work, with significant engagement from senior officials, Ministers and experts across Government. This is a high-profile outward facing role that will require the post-holder to act with significant autonomy including when representing the department in front of industry. There are plenty of opportunities to build visibility across the department and Government, and significant travel opportunities.
Person specification
You will:
- Work to ensure that the UK's priorities are appropriately addressed in the design of future networks, closely monitoring the ongoing technical negotiations over 6G standards, coordinating direct DSIT and wider government interventions where necessary and ensuring the latest developments are fed back to colleagues working on R&D and other policy initiatives
- Drive work to implement the Global Coalition on Telecommunications Security and Resilience Principles for 6G
Essential Criteria
- Experience of working on complex and technical concepts and a demonstrated ability to unpack their implications for policy-making
Desirable Criteria
- Experience of telecoms or adjacent technologies and an understanding of how these fit into and deliver DSIT's broader priorities
