Job description

Your world of expertise

Our Industrial Placement scheme offers ambitious and capable undergraduates the opportunity to gain valuable experience working alongside diverse and highly skilled experts in their field.  Youll be working on projects that really matter and will make a difference.

The Met Office is developing the next generation of its weather and climate modelling capability. LFRic provides software infrastructure for next-generation models and is designed to support efficient execution on emerging supercomputing architectures.

Regional modelling is an important part of this transition, requiring infrastructure capable of taking information from global LFRic simulations and using it to initialise and drive high-resolution limited-area models. The regional LFRic work already covers several tasks, including adapting data to different levels of detail, representing regional areas and terrain, converting weather information and creating the files needed to start and run a regional forecast. Some of this software is already in place, while other parts still need to be developed or brought together.

Through the project, you will develop practical skills in numerical methods, scientific software development and high-performance computing.

Your key duties:

  • Contribute to the development and testing of regional LFRic modelling infrastructure.
  • Work alongside Met Office scientists and software engineers to deliver a self-contained project within our regional modelling infrastructure.
