SPI Woodwork- Wood- Machinist - HMP Long Lartin (Ref: 22505)

The post holder will be expected to have a sound level of practical knowledge and experience within woodworking, with the ability to demonstrate and teach a range of traditional and modern woodworking techniques. This should include competent use of common woodworking machinery and hand tools, understanding of timber, sheet materials, fixings and finishes, and the ability to interpret technical drawings and working specifications. The post holder should be able to set up and safely operate relevant woodworking machinery, identify defects or potential problems, and ensure that work is completed to the required quality and specification.

The post holder will also be expected to use their woodworking knowledge to develop prisoners practical skills and confidence through structured training and meaningful work. This includes demonstrating safe working practices, supervising the use of machinery and equipment, identifying individual learning needs, and providing appropriate instruction and feedback. They must be able to recognise and manage woodworking-specific risks, maintain high standards of workshop housekeeping and safety, and ensure that all work is carried out in accordance with HMPPS policies, risk assessments, safe systems of work and relevant machinery and workshop requirements. A willingness to continue developing their own technical knowledge and support the introduction of new woodworking techniques, equipment and production methods is also expected.
