Contract Compliance Officer

Derbyshire County Council

Job Description

Grade 9 Resources and Waste Service Place Directorate

Help Us Deliver High-Quality Waste Services Across Derbyshire

We are looking for a proactive and organised Contract Compliance Officer to help ensure the effective delivery of waste management services on behalf of Derbyshire County Council.

This is an exciting role for someone who enjoys solving problems, working with people and ensuring services are delivered to high standards. You will play an important role in monitoring contractor performance, undertaking compliance activities, investigating operational issues and helping to ensure that waste services are delivered safely, legally and efficiently.

Working closely with contractors, district and borough councils, regulators and service users, you will act as a key link between the Council and service providers, helping to resolve issues and identify opportunities for improvement.

About You

We are looking for someone with excellent communication and relationship-building skills who can balance a supportive approach with the confidence to challenge poor performance where necessary.

You will ideally have experience of:

  • Monitoring operational services, contracts or compliance activities.
  • Carrying out inspections, audits or quality assurance checks.
  • Managing relationships with contractors, customers or external partners.
  • Investigating operational issues and implementing improvements.
  • Producing accurate reports and maintaining reliable records.
  • Working in waste management, environmental services, utilities, transport or other regulated operational environments.

You will also have strong analytical skills, attention to detail and the ability to work independently while managing competing priorities.

Previous experience in waste management or local government is desirable but not essential. We welcome applications from candidates with transferable compliance, operational monitoring or contract management experience.

What You'll Be Doing

The role offers a varied workload including:

  • Visiting operational sites.
  • Monitoring contract performance.
  • Undertaking compliance inspections and audits.
  • Working with contractors to resolve issues.
  • Supporting budget and performance monitoring.
  • Assisting with service improvements.
  • Responding to enquiries from residents and partner organisations.

No two days are the same, making this an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys combining office-based analysis with operational site work.

Why Join Us?

This role offers the opportunity to make a real contribution to services used by hundreds of thousands of Derbyshire residents every year.

You'll be joining a professional and supportive team working at the forefront of waste management, environmental compliance and public service delivery.

If you enjoy working with people, analysing information, solving problems and ensuring services operate to the highest standards, we'd love to hear from you.

Support & Benefits:

  • Generous Annual Leave Scheme (25 days increasing to 30 days after 5 years' service): Ensuring a healthy work-life balance.
  • Flexi Time Scheme: Up to two days flexi leave every four weeks (pro rata for part-time employees), subject to service needs.
