Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Registered Nurse to join the team. You need to be competent in cannulation and phlebotomy and administering SACT chemotherapy.

The unit is nurse led and the post holder is responsible for the assessment of care needs and toxicity assessment pre administration of chemotherapy and provide a specialist Oncology nursing service to patients, families, carers and health professionals.

Undertaking quality improvement initiatives such as audits, research and evidenced based practice and service development projects.

In the absence of the Senior Charge Nurse or Deputy Charge Nurse you will take charge of the clinical area to ensure effective operation of the department.

We aim to provide an individualised and supportive environment for patients. Supporting the junior team helping them develop their skills to reach their full potential.

We actively support professional development through provision of places on national study days and conferences where appropriate

The unit is open Monday-Friday 08.30-19.00hours (Including Bank Holidays). Saturdays 08:00-16:00 hours.

Main duties of the job

Safely assess patients coming in for SACT and be confident in managing treatment related toxicities. Safely administer all routes of Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatments. Cannulation, venepuncture. Be competent in accessing Central venous access devices. Time management of the day unit and supporting junior staff.

Deputise for band 7, manage sickness, complaints and staffing issues.

Pre proceed treatments for the next day, making decisions on supportive treatments and escalating as needed.

Qualifications

Essential

  • *Registered Adult Nurse on the NMC register

Desirable

  • *Health care management / leadership qualification

Experience

Essential

  • *Substantial post registration experience working in a complex health care setting / Acute NHS care setting supervising / mentoring junior staff
  • *Evidence of professional /clinical knowledge in area supplemented by specialist clinical and or managerial training and CPD
  • *Can demonstrate understanding / experience / willingness to be a practice based supervisor / assessor as detailed in the Nursing & Midwifery Council ( NMC ) standards for student supervision and assessment
  • *Professional portfolio which demonstrates continuing professional development, evidence of ability to maintain professional registration
  • *Relevant and recent clinical experience within the speciality /acute care setting, including the supervision /education of junior staff
  • *Experience of mentoring undergraduate students
  • *Evidence of ability to lead /coordinate a shift /area of department
  • *Experience in learning from incidents /complaints and supporting changes in practice.
