Band 8B MDR-TB Practitioner Psychologist (0.2 WTE, Fixed Term - 12 Months)
We are seeking a highly motivated Band 8B Practitioner Psychologist to join our team for a 12-month fixed-term role.In this position, you will take the lead in scoping the psychosocial needs of patients with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of psychological support within a specialised clinical setting. Part of the scoping will include designing and implementing a range of interviews with patients, staff and other key stakeholders to identify the best way to provide psychological services in this population.You will work closely under the supervision of our Consultant Clinical Psychologist, receiving guidance and mentorship while carrying out the scoping. By the end of your contract, you will be responsible for producing comprehensive recommendations that define the psychological professional's role within the wider multidisciplinary team (MDT), including guidance on banding and hours for future positions.

Main duties of the job
Barts Heart and Thorax Centre (BHC) Psychological Services works with adult patients and their families who live with an acute or chronic cardiac or respiratory condition and those who require a critical care admission (predominantly cardio-thoracic and cancer related). Specifically these patients are under the care of specialist multidisciplinary teams within the Barts Heart and Thorax Centre, including the Adult Congenital Heart Service (GUCH), The Heart Attack Centre (HAC); The Adult Critical Care Unit (ACCU); Heart Failure, Electrophysiology, Inherited Cardiovascular Conditions, Difficult Asthma and Cystic Fibrosis.
The post holder will take a lead scoping role within the Respiratory Division to assess the specific psychosocial needs of the multi-drug resistant Tuberculosis (MDR-TB) patient population. This will involve scoping the needs of patients and staff and defining the role of a psychological professional who might work as part of that clinical provision. The primary outcome of the post at the end of the 12 months will be to provide clinical evidence and guidance about how psychological services should be delivered including hours and banding and defining the role of the psychological professional within the wider MDT. This will form part of a wider business case for the rest of the service to be substantiated

Essential
- Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course and presenting with the full range of clinical severity across the full range of care settings including outpatient, community, in-patient and out-patient care settings
- Experience of exercising full clinical responsibility for clients' psychological care and treatment, both as a professionally qualified care co-ordinator and within the context of a multi-disciplinary care plan.
- Experience of teaching, training and/or professional and clinical supervision of other clinical psychologists and professional staff.
- Experience of working in clinical health psychology
- Experience of working in cardiac and/or respiratory services Experience of inter-agency working and service development
Desirable
- Experience of working within acute specialist cardio-respiratory and critical care services
- Experience of providing line management
- Experience of applying psychology in diverse cultural contexts.

Knowledge and skills
Essential
- Doctoral level knowledge of clinical psychology including highly developed knowledge of lifespan developmental psychology, models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, and two or more distinct psychological therapies
- Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment intervention and management, including neuropsychological assessment and interpretation, frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration
- A high-level ability to communicate effectively (both a written and orally) complex, highly technical and clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and a wide range of lay and professional persons within and outside the NHS.
- Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups
- Ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse
- Doctoral level knowledge of research design and methodology, including complex multivariate data analysis as practiced within the field of clinical psychology
- Knowledge of legislation and its implications for both clinical practice and professional management in relation to the client group and mental health.
- Evidence of continuing professional development as recommended by the BPS/HPC.
- Formal training in supervision of other psychologists
Desirable
- Highly developed knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies in specific difficult to treat groups (e.g. personality disorder, dual diagnoses, people with additional disabilities, trauma and severely challenging behaviours etc.)
- Highly developed knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies in patients with cardio-respiratory conditions and those who have had a critical care admission
- Knowledge of evidence relating to psychosocial needs of MDR-TB patients.
- Ability to demonstrate leadership and service development skills
Qualifications
Essential
- Good honours degree in Psychology or equivalent
- Completion of a Health and Care Professions Council/British Psychological Society accredited postgraduate professional training course in either clinical or counselling psychology, including clinical psychometrics and lifespan developmental psychology.
- Registration with the Health and Care Professionals Council as Practitioner Psychologist.
- Formal training in supervision of other psychologists
