Job summary
Required to fill this new post within the Colorectal and General Surgery Department at St Jamess University Hospital. We are looking for an exceptional candidate to join our team of twelve (ten WTE) colorectal consultants. We expect applicants to have thrived clinically and professionally at trainee level, conducted a higher degree (research/leadership/education) and to have completed a suitable fellowship in colorectal surgery. The current consultant team in the John Goligher Unit has a strong culture of support, teamwork, collaboration and multi-disciplinary working, with a focus on high quality, evidence-based surgery and clinical care. These values are fundamental to our unit, and we will place greater emphasis on commitment to them than on any individual subspecialty interest. Applications are therefore encouraged from candidates across all training backgrounds. The successful candidate would be expected to contribute to the Cancer MDT and whichever other MDT aligns with their sub-specialty interest(s). Whilst all surgeons are expected to perform resections for colon cancer, those with interests in IBD, IF etc may choose not to offer rectal cancer resection, although this is open to negotiation.
Main duties of the job
Successful candidates can expect an all-day theatre list per week plus access to day surgery and endoscopy lists as required and in line with their practice. Each year our unit attracts excellent individuals to our post-CCT Fellowship, and it is imperative that all of our consultants are able to offer this level of training to continue to attract world-class fellows. Contribution to weekly unit breakfast meetings, consultant business meetings, consultant time-outs and monthly governance meetings is expected. Consultants in the Goligher Unit have a track record of leadership roles at both local and national level in education, research and specialty associations. The successful candidate would be expected to follow a similar course. The unit remains at the forefront of international research into colorectal disease and is supported by world class pathology, gastroenterology and radiology departments. Our academic University department, led by Professor David Jayne, has a large portfolio of both basic science and translational research projects and opportunities to get involved in research will be encouraged. The Leeds Colorectal Department consists of 12 surgeons named below, currently no SAS posts within the department, Our resident Doctor distribution within department is currently allocated at 5 alongside deanery allocations each year.

Job responsibilities
The successful applicant should possess MB,BS, FRCS (or equivalent) and should be included on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview, if currently within a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist Register.
Applicants should have established skills in Colorectal Surgery and its related specialties including Elective and Acute General Surgery. A strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and a research interest is desirable.
