Job summary

A post has arisen for a Substantive Consultant Plastic Surgeon with interests in Centre Level Burn Care for adults and paediatric, paediatric trauma, and general Plastic Surgery at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will join our team of 24 consultants working between Wythenshawe Hospital and the Oxford Road Campus of MFT, which hosts Royal Manchester Children's Hospital.

Daytime work will include adult and paediatric burn care, paediatric trauma and general plastic surgery including skin oncology in both adults and paediatrics.

The on-call commitment will be 1:8 and will cover all adult burn injury referrals, paediatric burn injury referrals and paediatric plastic surgery trauma referrals (including hand and major trauma).

You will be encouraged to engage in ongoing service transformation in orthoplastic and burn surgery. Such involvement would be recognised in future job planning discussions and appropriate SPA allowance credited. Clinical leadership is encouraged and there will be opportunities to develop additional services.

This is a full time position with 10 Programmed Activities spread throughout the week.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and inclusion on the Specialist Register.
  • CCT (Certificate of Completion of Training) in Plastic Surgery or equivalent, with subspecialty training in burns surgery to include those who have submitted for the alternative pathway and expect to attain certification
  • Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (or equivalent).
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development and commitment to lifelong learning.

Desirable

  • Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS) and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) certification.

Experience

Essential

  • Extensive experience in managing complex burn injuries in both adults and children, including acute care, reconstruction, and rehabilitation.
  • Proven track record of working in a multidisciplinary team within a specialised burns unit or centre.

Desirable

  • Demonstrated leadership in clinical governance, quality improvement, and service development.
  • Experience in managing major trauma including limb reconstruction
  • Experience in managing major incidents involving burn casualties.

Skills and Knowledge

Essential

  • Expert knowledge of burn care pathways, including acute resuscitation, surgical intervention, and long-term rehabilitation.
  • Strong understanding of the psychological and social impact of burn injuries on patients and their families.
  • Proficiency in advanced surgical techniques, including skin grafting, flap reconstruction, and scar management.
  • Familiarity with national and international guidelines for burn care, including NHS England standards and British Burn Association recommendations.

  • Willingness to participate in on-call rotas and respond to major incidents as required.
  • Ability to travel between sites within the burns network, if necessary.
