Health and Care Jersey is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and dynamic substantive Consultant in Gastroenterology. The successful applicant will join a team of two Consultant Gastroenterologists, two Staff Grades and a team of specialist Nurses to provide a comprehensive service in Gastroenterology. The successful applicant will ideally have a specialist interest.
Main duties of the job
Jointly develop a service of excellence for gastroenterology which ensures a seamless integration between Jersey and tertiary centres in England.
Participate in the development of the gastroenterology strategy for the island of Jersey including endoscopy services.
To work in close partnership and liaison with Primary Care and other specialist services.
To undertake inpatient specialist reviews for gastroenterology.
To undertake outpatient clinics for both gastroenterology.
Provide diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower GI endoscopy.
To provide clinical advice & support to primary care colleagues and other consultants within Health and Care Jersey medical model.
To deliver personalised, evidence informed medical care plans to all patients that are appropriately documented and regularly evaluated.
To provide advice and timely medical reviews and interventions as part of the interdisciplinary model of care.
To participate and attend relevant services MDTs.
To liaise with tertiary referral centres as appropriate to provide patient centered care and service improvements.
About us
The successful candidate will have broad experience of inpatient and outpatient gastroenterology and hepatology, fully competent in diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy, including management of GI bleeding.
The applicant will undertake Inpatient specialist reviews where requested and take part in GI-Bleed on-call rota.
For newly appointed consultants a mentor will be allocated to support their induction to the post.

Job responsibilities
There are currently two Gastroenterology Consultants, Dr Moses Duku and Dr Mina Hanna, with special interests in advanced diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, bowel cancer screening, wireless capsule endoscopy and IBD. They are supported by an IBD nurse specialist, Consultant Radiologist with special interest diagnostic gastroscopy and EUS, two SAS doctors, specialist nurses in alcohol, nutrition nurse, dieticians, a clinical investigations unit which performs 24 hours pH, and a fibro scan service. There is a close working relationship with the GI surgery, radiology (diagnostic and interventional), pathology and oncology departments and we run a weekly GI MDT, IBD and Nutrition MDTs.
Our endoscopy unit has highly motivated staff and performs a wide range of endoscopic procedures. The unit currently comprises of two endoscopy suites, fully equipped with all the latest Olympus equipment including AI. The overall endoscopic workload is around 5,000 cases per annum, including gastroscopy, colonoscopy, EMR, EUS, stenting, treatment of gastro-oesophageal varices, insertion of feeding gastrostomy tubes, balloon dilatation, APC and wireless capsule endoscopy. There are dedicated endoscopy lists for bowel cancer screening and symptomatic FIT services.
The specialty outpatient services see patients with a wide range of gastroenterology and hepatology conditions. The clinics are divided into General Gastroenterology, Liver and IBD clinics. We have strong links with tertiary centres in the UK and jointly manage complex cases.
Management Structure
Health and Care Jersey is a directorate of the Government of Jersey that is responsible for the delivery of specialist health care and the running of the general hospital. The directorate is led by a Chief Officer, Tom Walker who leads an executive team including a Director of Clinical Service, Claire Thompson and a Medical Director, Simon West who is also Medical Responsible Officer/Suitable person with the GMC for appraisal and revalidation. Health and Care Jersey is organised as a series of care groups each with leadership team lead by a chief of service as detailed below. This post sits within the medical care group.

Medicine in Jersey is fully age and specialty integrated. There are 4 medical wards, Plemont, Rozel, Bartlett and Corbiere.
A 5-bedded Enhanced Care Area is sited on AAU and there is a separate intensive care unit led by intensivists. There is also an Ambulatory Emergency Care Unit led by the Acute Medicine Department. There is a 25 bed Acute Assessment Unit.
SAS doctors are responsible for the day-to-day management of their patients on the wards with the help of clinical fellows, FY1 or FY2 doctor whom they closely supervise.
On call, the SAS doctor is responsible for seeing patients referred by the Emergency Department and reviewing patients admitted to the AAU by GPs in conjunction with the Acute Medicine team. A core responsibility of the Medicine Care Group is the provision of a safe acute medical service. The Care Group always provides named Consultant supervision for non-Consultants and ensures that prompt review and treatment is provided for acute medical emergencies referred by General Practitioners or the Emergency Department.
Consultants are responsible for producing and updating guidelines for the management of acute medical emergencies in their specialist area.
Care Group Statistics
There are 83 medical beds. 12-20 acute medical admissions on average during each 24-hour period on call within a range of approximately 6-24. There are approximately 4,500 medical admissions annually.
In addition to outpatient clinics and 4 general medical wards containing 83 beds, the Medical Service Care Group is involved in the management of several specialist facilities. These include:
25 bedded Acute Assessment Unit (AAU)
5 bedded Enhanced Care Area (ECA)
6 chair Ambulatory Emergency Care (AEC)
A well-equipped Clinical Investigations Department providing echocardiography, exercise ECG, respiratory assessment and GI physiology.
An endoscopy suite providing a full range of endoscopy and bronchoscopy services.
Diabetes Centre providing outpatient care for the diabetic population of Jersey, including retinal photography and specialist nursing support. Renal/Dialysis unit, providing emergency, acute and longer-term renal support as well as management of transplanted patients and assessment and treatment of renal conditions.6 bedded isolation area for infected or neutropenic patients.
