Job summary
We have an exciting opportunity to join the Swansea Bay Public Health Team as a Public Health Consultant. We have 1.8 full-time equivalents available with portfolio areas covering health protection, primary care and inclusive health. We would welcome applications from those who wish to work part-time or as part of job sharing arrangements.
The Swansea Bay Public Health Directorate is led by an Executive Director of Public Health who sits on the Swansea Bay University Health Board. The team includes public health consultants, public health specialist leaders and other senior leaders.
The Directorate has grown significantly over recent years, and now as well as a core team of public health practitioners the team includes a local Health Protection Service including an Immunization Team.
The local Health Protection Service provides leadership and co-ordination for the Swansea Bay Health Protection Partnership, ensuring effective provision of health protection functions across the system.
Main duties of the job
Although you will hold an agreed and specific portfolio of work, your responsibilities will likely cover all areas of Public Health professional practice, including:
Provide public health leadership, advice, and support to improve population health outcomes.
Develop partnerships and influence agencies for broad participation in health improvement initiatives.
Work to reduce inequalities through effective local and regional partnerships and community engagement.
Contribute to developing integrated strategies and needs assessments with local authorities and the voluntary sector.
Take responsibility for policies, programmes, services, projects, and interagency plans to deliver public health priorities.
Plan and develop high-quality, equitable services within evidence-based and ethical frameworks across primary and secondary healthcare, and social care.
Utilise information and intelligence systems to support public health actions across disciplines and organisations.
Collaborate with the senior leadership team of the Health Board to support public health priorities through needs assessment, service planning, improvement, and governance activities.
Provide local leadership to enable national public health developments.

Person Specification
Training & Qualifications
Essential
- Inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register or UK Public Health (Specialist) Register
- Minimum 6 months training in health protection
- Applicants must meet minimum CPD requirements in accordance with the requirements of the Faculty of Public Health
Knowledge and understanding
Essential
- Understanding of epidemiology and statistics, public health practice, health promotion, health economics and health care evaluation
- Knowledge of methods of developing clinical quality assurance, quality improvement and evidence based clinical and/or public health practice
Desirable
- Knowledge of quality improvement methodologies and their application
Experience
Essential
- Significant experience of working at senior level in a large complex organisation.
- Demonstration of transforming services or significant service re-design and change
Desirable
- Experience of working/interfacing with Public Health Wales; Welsh Government
