Job summary

Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust provides maternity and neonatal services across its two main acute sites: Scunthorpe General Hospital (SGH) and the Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital (DPOW), Grimsby. Together, the Trust supports a combined birth activity of approximately 4,800 births per year, comprising around 2,100 births at SGH and 2,700 births at DPOW.

Both hospitals provide 24/7 maternity and obstetric services.

DPOW also hosts a Local Neonatal Unit (LNU / Level 2) with 3 intensive care cots and 1 high dependency cot,8 special care cots and 4 transitional care cots.

Both Paediatric wards (Disney ward at SGH and Rainforest ward at DPOW) have 2 High Observation beds and 10 paediatric beds. The Paediatric Assessment and Observation unit at both sites have 8 beds. Both sites are supported by a robust Community Nursing team and Hospital @ home team. Specialist Community Nursing team support the consultants in subspecialities which includes Respiratory, Epilepsy. Endocrine, and Oncology. A team of Paediatric Diabetic Nurses support Consultant with special interest in Diabetes. The Diabetes team have ensured the lowest HbA1C results in the network for 4 consecutive years.

Main duties of the job

As a senior employee of the Trust the post holder will work in close co-operation with, and support, other clinical, medical, professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trust's Patients.

Integral to the responsibilities of the post are the following requirements: -

To ensure the provision of a high standard clinical service.

To provide effective leadership to the junior doctors and medical students

To undertake all work in accordance to the Trust's procedures and operating policies

To conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust's operational group service plans.

Job responsibilities

Participation in consultant-of-the-week rota (approx. 1:10), providing senior decision-making, acute assessment and ward leadership.

Non-resident on-call rota (approx. 1:10) providing acute paediatric, neonatal and safeguarding Level 3 support.

Outpatient responsibilities including general paediatrics, rapid-access clinics,

Supervision and teaching of junior doctors, ANNPs, nurses and allied health professionals

Person Specification

Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • Registerable Medical Degree MBBS MRCPCH
  • Valid Level 3 Safeguarding Training
  • MRCPCH by examination or equivalent
  • Valid BLS Training

Desirable

  • Appropriate higher degree eg MD, PhD or higher degree

Eligibility

Essential

  • Full GMC Registration
  • On the GMC's Specialist Register OR within six months of CCT at time of scheduled interview
  • Portfolio Pathway (formerly CESR) applicants must be on Specialist Register at the point of application

Speciality specific skills related to post

Essential

  • Appropriate to the holding of a Consultant Paediatrician with wide experience in General and Neonatal paediatrics. Experience in Safeguarding children. Awareness of new developments in the specialty with ability to critically assess the impact of these on the service. Able to support colleagues in constructively challenging other professionals, when appropriate, in the best interests of children Able to participate in organization training need analysis, and to teach and educate health service professional and multi-agency partners as part of a team Willingness and ability to fulfill the key elements of the job description.

Knowledge and Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Ability to provide expert clinical opinion across a wide range of paediatric conditions
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
  • Ability to prioritise and organise work effectively
  • Willingness to participate in and lead on multi-disciplinary teams, balancing departmental and personal objectives

Language and Communication Skills
