Job summary

The Christie is an international leader in cancer research and development and the largest cancer treatment centre of its kind in Europe.

The role will form part the management team of the Estate and Facilities Division, within the Site Services Sub-Division.The role will take accountability for identified site services management functions including:-Domestic Cleaning Services and Deep Clean-Residential & Waste Management, including portering distribution-Pest control. -Elements of this service are provided 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.-The role will require ensuring legal and statutory compliance for the site services including meetingnational cleaning standards and NHS standards.

This role includes operating and being based at our main site in Withington as well as our satellite sites across the wider Greater Manchester and Cheshire areas.Pay - Band 8a £57,528 to £64,75037 1/2 Hours per week (27 days leave plus Bank holidays rising incrementally on years of service)NHS Pension enrolment

How you would tactically operate a Site Services sub-division of Estates & Facilities in terms of cleaning & waste management in a specialist NHS Cancer Centre.

Main duties of the job

As our Deputy Head of Site Services, you will be accountable for the management, and performance of all functions under your control, including the following:o Domestic cleaningo Deep cleaning (including management of Deep Clean schedule)o Provide Deep clean services to minimise the risk of Hospital Acquired Infections recognising this is key to Infection Prevention & Controlo Discharge cleaningo Provide cleaning services to all clinical & non-clinical areas adhering to the National Cleaning Standardso Provide periodic cleaning programme / People shift rota'so Waste management / Provide waste removal services for all waste streamso Ensure systems & procedures are in place for the effective & safe management of the serviceo Environmental walkabouts & actions are undertaken regularly to ensure high standards & compliance domestic cleaning services, deep cleaning & waste management along with environmental standards.

As a key senior member of our team the role will involve organising strategic plans with objectives & tactics for service development & improvement including key areas such as managing change, culture, & behaviour development programmes, Site Services improvement programmes & contributing to the estate & decarbonisation strategies, inclusive of waste management targets.

Job responsibilities

1. Plans and coordinates the operational delivery of Domestic Services, Deep Clean Teams, Waste Management, and Waste Portering to ensure services are provided efficiently, effectively, and in line with National NHS Cleaning Standards, infection prevention and control requirements, and Trust policies.

2. Provides leadership support to Support Services Managers and Waste Minimisation Officer to maintain high standards of service delivery, address operational issues, and achieve key performance indicators.

3. Develops, reviews, and implements policies, procedures, and standard operating protocols covering all areas of cleaning, waste management, and portering to ensure services comply with legislation, Trust objectives, and best practice.

4. Oversees cleaning and waste management audits and surveys to monitor compliance, evaluate service quality, and implement corrective actions to improve performance and reduce risk.

5. Develops and implements the Waste Management Strategy in alignment with the NHS England Waste Strategy and HTM 07-01 guidance, ensuring legislative compliance across all Trust sites.

6. Schedules and monitors work rotas, task frequencies, and training plans for Domestic Services, Deep Clean, and Waste Management, teams to maintain safe staffing levels and meet statutory and mandatory training requirements.

7. Maintains systems for recording, analysing, and reporting performance data, incidents, complaints, and resource utilisation to inform management reports and support service improvements.

8. Prepares annual and monthly reports detailing service performance, policy implementation, budget compliance, progress against objectives, and risk mitigation measures for submission to the Head of Site Services.

9. Supports project planning and mobilisation activities related to refurbishments, capital works, and service development to ensure operational considerations are incorporated and service continuity is maintained.

10. Produces, reviews, and updates service level agreements and contingency plans to ensure services are delivered safely, efficiently, and in line with Trust policies and legal obligations.

11. Liaises with external stakeholders, including statutory agencies, contractors, and suppliers, to ensure compliance with legislation, resolve operational issues, and secure value for money in service delivery.

12. Provides expert advice to operational teams on cleaning standards, infection control practices, policy requirements, and waste management procedures to ensure adherence to national guidance and Trust policies.

13. Manages delegated budgets for relevant service areas, monitors expenditure against plans, and implements actions to achieve financial targets and efficient use of resources.

14. Oversees the recruitment, induction, supervision, performance management, and development of Support Services Managers, Waste Minimisation Officer, and operational staff to ensure effective workforce management and compliance with HR policies.

15. Leads the monitoring and management of attendance, conduct, and performance issues, undertaking investigations, writing statements of case, and progressing HR processes in line with Trust procedures.

16. Maintains electronic and paper-based records related to cleaning performance, waste management, policy documentation, staffing, training, and incidents to ensure information is accurate, accessible, and compliant with data protection legislation.

17. Evaluates new cleaning products, equipment, waste management innovations, and policy changes to inform procurement decisions, improve service delivery, and support achievement of sustainability objectives.

18. Attends internal and external meetings, working groups, and forums to represent the Trust on site services, waste management, and policy matters and to contribute to policy development and service improvement initiatives.

19. Responds promptly to service interruptions, emergencies, and operational incidents to minimise disruption and ensure patient, visitor, and staff safety.

20. Demonstrates the agreed set of values and is accountable for own attitude and behaviour, contributing to a positive, inclusive, and professional working environment.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • A relevant degree or -experience working at a senior level
  • A management qualification equivalent to an NVQ level 5. Diploma in Leadership and Management or working towards a qualification

Desirable

  • Master's or equivalent in a related discipline e.g. Environmental Management

Experience

Essential

  • Strategic management of Waste Management and Cleaning in a hospital environment
  • NHS National Cleaning and Standards knowledge
  • Working at a senior level and networking across a complex healthcare setting both internally and externally
  • Awareness of how the cleanliness of an area contributes to health and safety and infection control
  • Demonstrates managerial skills with experience of managing large staff groups
  • Experience of dealing with complex HR issue
  • Experience of management processes and systems of control
  • Experience of conducting training regarding the use and storage of cleaning equipment and materials for different surfaces and for different tasks
  • Ability to lead and manage minor projects that involve coordination of activities and close communication with end users
  • Analysing and interpreting data and information including national statistics and benchmarking data
