Job summary

The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to recruit an Estates Maintenance Carpenter to join the Estates Maintenance team at Hillingdon Hospital on a 6-month fixed-term contract.

This is an exciting opportunity to work within a large and complex acute hospital environment, supporting the delivery of safe, compliant and effective healthcare facilities through the provision of high-quality building fabric maintenance services.

The successful candidate will undertake a wide range of carpentry, joinery and general building fabric maintenance activities across clinical and non-clinical areas, helping to ensure the hospital estate remains operational, safe and fit for purpose. Working as part of a multidisciplinary Estates Maintenance workforce, the post holder will support reactive maintenance, planned preventative maintenance (PPM), backlog maintenance and minor works activities across the Hillingdon Hospital site.

This fixed-term position has been created to support service delivery during a period of workforce transition and operational demand. Whilst initially offered as a 6-month fixed-term contract, there may be the opportunity for the contract to be extended or become permanent, subject to organisational requirements, funding and future establishment changes.

Main duties of the job

  • Undertake reactive and planned carpentry, joinery and building fabric maintenance works across Hillingdon Hospital.
  • Carry out repairs and maintenance to doors, fire doors, locks, ironmongery, partitions, ceilings, flooring, fixtures, fittings and associated building fabric assets.
  • Respond to maintenance requests generated through the Estates Helpdesk and CAFM system within agreed response times.
  • Diagnose building fabric defects and undertake appropriate repairs to maintain a safe and compliant environment.
  • Support planned preventative maintenance (PPM) programmes and backlog maintenance reduction initiatives.
  • Assist with minor works, refurbishment projects, office moves and accommodation alterations.
  • Undertake fire door maintenance and associated repairs to support Trust fire safety compliance.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, work orders and job completion information using Trust CAFM systems.
  • Liaise professionally with clinical staff, patients, contractors and colleagues to deliver a customer-focused maintenance service.
  • Work collaboratively with mechanical, electrical and other Estates Maintenance colleagues as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of Estates Maintenance services and the overall resilience of the Trust estate.

Education and Qualifications

Essential

  • CNVQ Level 2 or NVQ Level 3 in Carpentry, Joinery, Building Fabric Maintenance or equivalent recognised trade qualification

Desirable

  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Health & Safety training (IOSH, CSCS or equivalent)

Experience

Essential

  • Experience undertaking carpentry, joinery or building fabric maintenance works
  • Experience carrying out repairs within occupied buildings
  • Experience working within a maintenance, construction or estates environment
  • Experience undertaking planned and reactive maintenance activities

Desirable

  • Experience of fire door maintenance and building fabric compliance activities
  • Experience working within NHS or healthcare environments

Skills, knowledge and abilities

Essential

  • Good practical carpentry and joinery skills
  • Ability to undertake building fabric repairs safely and effectively
  • Knowledge of building maintenance techniques and materials
