Job summary

The role of GP Training Programme Director for Expansion is to work with and support the Heads of School and the Primary Care Dean in leading the delivery of a wide range of functions, aligned to the objectives of NHS England Workforce Training and Education (WT&E).

The GP Training Programme Director for Expansion will focus on activities in support of:

  • Learning set facilitation
  • Supporting the GP TPDs in the Half Day Release scheme in providing curriculum and placement support
  • Potential for providing support for departmental fellows
  • Working closely with GP Tutors and locality training hub colleagues in promoting capacity and new organisational placements to manage expansion, capacity and updated ways of working within GP Training

The GP Training Programme Director for Expansion will focus on the improvement of learner supervision, assessment and experience, engagement of faculty and ensuring effective educational outcomes, both now and in the future. The role is evolving and will also focus on the whole workforce transformation and developing multi-professional links.

The GP Training Programme Director for Expansion will work across the spectrum of health and, where relevant, social care, within the context of a team, so that the provision of education reflects changing service models. This will deliver an integrated workforce comprising individuals from a spectrum of professional and other backgrounds.

Main duties of the job

You should be a self-motivated individual, able to respond quickly to changing priorities and workloads. Strong leadership skills are essential.

You should have good knowledge of the GP curriculum and associated mandatory requirements and be able to positively influence the expansion of GP specialty training. We expect applicants to have extensive knowledge of General Practice and be a current GP registered with the GMC.

Candidates should be experienced in healthcare education management - which may be achieved through a formal university course or equivalent experience.

You will be a representative of the Primary Care Department and will be expected to be a positive advocate for NHSE at all times. You will promote leadership that inspires, motivates, and empowers all staff, whilst demonstrating the values of the NHS.

Experience and Knowledge

Essential

  • Considerable experience of working with learners or doctors in training in an educational context
  • Experience of clinical and educational leadership and innovation, including managing a multi-professional team
  • Demonstrable track record of delivery in service and education
  • Understanding of developments involving the relevant Colleges/Faculties, professional bodies, related NHS organisations and regulatory bodies
  • Understanding of the workforce transformation agenda
  • Trained and experienced in recruitment, selection and Equality and Diversity in the last 3 years
  • Active involvement in, and up to date with, appraisal processes
  • Knowledge of the NHS, its structures and processes, including an understanding of healthcare/multi-professional workforce matters
  • Applicants who are doctors require a Licence to Practise

Desirable

  • Previous or current appointment as a leader in healthcare education
  • Awareness of funding streams for healthcare education
  • Understanding of current health, social care and education policy

Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • Membership/Fellowship of a College, Faculty, professional association and/or regulatory body
  • Attendance at courses aimed to support educational development (example: educator courses, Train the Trainer, etc)
  • Educational qualification such as a postgraduate certificate, or presently undertaking an approved and validated course to obtain at the earliest opportunity
  • GP Medical practitioner registered with the GMC with a current license to practice

Desirable

  • Higher educational qualification such as a postgraduate diploma or Masters in Medical Education
