Job summary

The Head of Community Services is a senior leadership role responsible for the operational, and clinical delivery of Nottinghamshire Hospices community-based services. You will ensure the provision of high-quality, safe, and compassionate palliative and end-of-life care, supporting people to live as well as possible in the place they call home.

Main duties of the job

As a key member of the Hospice Leadership Team, you will provide visible and inspiring leadership, driving excellence in care delivery, service performance, and workforce development. This role combines strong operational management with professional clinical leadership, requiring an experienced registered healthcare professional with a sound understanding of palliative and end-of-life care.

You will lead and develop our Hospice in Your Home (24-hour service) and Wellbeing Day Services, ensuring they are responsive, sustainable, and patient-centred. The role involves regular travel across Nottinghamshire and participation in the clinical on-call rota (approximately one week in every five weeks).

We are seeking a compassionate and experienced leader to drive excellence in our community palliative care services.

With strong experience in service delivery, you will manage performance, resources, and workforce planning to meet the needs of our patients and families.

Job responsibilities

As a member of the Hospice Leadership Team, the Head of Community Services will provide visible leadership across community services, driving excellence in care delivery, service performance, workforce development, and stakeholder engagement. The role combines operational management with professional clinical leadership and requires a highly experienced registered healthcare professional with a strong understanding of palliative and end-of-life care.

The postholder will oversee the management and development of:

  • Hospice in Your Home (24-hour community service)
  • Wellbeing Day Services

Person Specification

Experience

Essential

  • Senior management experience within healthcare, hospice, community, or palliative care services.
  • Experience of leading multidisciplinary teams and managing managers.
  • Experience of operational and clinical service management.
  • Experience of quality improvement, governance, risk management, and service development.
  • Experience of managing change and driving service improvements.
  • Experience of building effective partnerships with external stakeholders and healthcare organisations.

Desirable

  • Specialist qualification or significant experience in palliative and end-of-life care.
  • Experience of delivering education, training, and workforce development programmes.
  • Experience of working within hospice services.

Essential Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong understanding of palliative and end-of-life care principles and practice.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organisational, and resource management skills.
  • Ability to analyse data, monitor performance, and implement improvements.
  • Commitment to person-centred care and the hospice values.

Qualifications

Essential

  • ESSENTIAL
  • Essential Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse, Allied Health Professional, or other Registered Healthcare Professional with current professional registration.
  • Degree-level qualification in a relevant healthcare discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Leadership or management qualification, or willingness to work towards one.

Desirable

  • Master's degree or equivalent advanced study.
