Job summary
Lander Medical Practice are looking for a part-time Healthcare Assistant to join our team for 22 hours per week Monday to Wednesday between the hours of 8am and 5pm, and to cover annual leave and sickness. The role will involve supporting the practice nursing team in the delivery of nursing services, working as part of the practice multidisciplinary team, delivering care within the HCA scope of practice to the registered patient population. You will need to be confident and empathetic in dealing with the public, remain calm under pressure and have excellent communication and customer service skills.
Main duties of the job
The following are the core responsibilities of the healthcare assistant. There may be on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:
- Undertake venepuncture
- Support the practice nurse with health promotion programmes
- Carry out baseline observations such as blood pressure, temperature, pulse rate, recording findings accurately
- Facilitate routine BP/ECG monitoring, advising patients accordingly
- Support the practice nurse with the management of chronic disease clinics
- Act as a chaperone as required
- When trained, administer flu/covid vaccinations
- Ensure specimens are recorded and ready for onward transportation
- Ensure all clinical rooms are adequately stocked and prepared for each session
- Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the practice IPC policy
About us
We are a very busy GP practice and have 8 GP partners and 5 salaried GPs, with a patient list size of 19,500 patients, covering two sites. Our nursing team consists of Practice Nurses and HCA's, along with a supportive administrative and reception team. We also work closely with our neighbouring practice as a PCN and have ARRS roles working with us including a Clinical Pharmacists and Paramedics. We have a satellite surgery, which is open every day.

The healthcare assistant will deliver and assist clinical staff in the provision of treatment, preventative care, health promotion and patient education.
Job responsibilities
The following are the core responsibilities of the healthcare assistant. There may be on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:
a. Undertake new patient health checks
b. Support the practice nurse with health promotion programmes
c. Carry out baseline observations such as pulse oximitery, blood pressure, temperature, pulse rate, recording findings accurately
d. Facilitate routine and 24-hour BP monitoring, advising patients accordingly
g. Carry out BMI checks as directed
h. Act as a chaperone as required
i. When trained, administer flu vaccinations, B12 injections etc.
j. Carry out ECGs as requested
k. Ensure specimens are recorded and ready for onward transportation
l. Provide support during minor operations as required
m. Ensure all clinical rooms are adequately stocked and prepared for each session

Qualifications
Essential
- Qualifications
- GCSE grade A to C in English and Maths
- Qualified to NVQ Level 3
- Qualified in phlebotomy
Desirable
- Experience of working with a healthcare setting
- Experience in administering injections including flu, pneumococcal, B12
- Experience in carrying out ECGs
- Experience in carrying out BP / ABPM
