Job summary
We are looking to employ a part time qualified Health Care Assistant to work within our busy and friendly GP surgery. The successful candidate will work within our clinical team made up of nurses and GPs.Pay will be dependant upon experience and can be discussed during the interview. There is some flexibility with the hours we are looking for 30 hours per week, 6 hours per day Monday to Friday to be discussed at interview.
Main duties of the job
- Phlebotomy
- NHS Health Checks
- ECG Recording
- Blood Pressure Readings
- Urinalysis
- Ensure specimens are labelled and bagged ready for collection with the necessary paperwork completed.
- Ensure clinical waste collection runs smoothly, reporting any problems to the Practice Nurse.
- Ensure sharps bins are ready for collection.
- Restocking/arranging maintenance of equipment.
- Restocking of clinical areas and consulting rooms.
- Chaperoning duties
- Assisting the assessment and surveillance of patients health and well-being
- Helping to raise awareness of health and well-being and how it can be promoted
- Assisting with the collection and collation of data on needs related to health and well-being
- Provide lifestyle advice to patients making any necessary referrals within the practice.
- Home visiting housebound patients for reviews and blood tests if required.

- Assisting with specialist clinics for example Coil appointments and Minor surgery as required.

About us
We are a friendly GP practice in the heart of Royal Wootton Bassett made up of GPs, ANPs, Practice Nurses, HCAs, Pharmacists, Specialist Practitioners and a large non clinical team. We have 9800 patients.
Job responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities:
The HCA works within the organisation and supports the practice nursing and administrative teams in the delivery of clinical and administrative services. This role involves working as part of the practice multi-disciplinary team, delivering care within their scope of practice to the entitled patient population.
Having completed the Care Certificate or equivalent qualification, the HCA will deliver and assist clinical staff in the provision of treatment, preventative care, health promotion, long-term condition management and patient education while also supporting the administrative team on an as-required basis.
The HCA will work under the supervision of a registered clinician while developing competencies in community-based care. The role is at Support Worker Level and as described in NHS E Primary Care and General Practice Nursing Career and Core Capabilities Framework.
Following agreed clinical protocols in conjunction with the nursing team and referral to GPs as appropriate.
Consult with patients and their families to undertake assessments of patient need
Deliver and assist clinical staff in the provision of treatment, preventative care, health promotion, long-term condition management and patient education.
Provide clinical support to registered nurses and other healthcare professionals within the organisation
Deliver basic clinical care interventions under supervision, supporting continuity of care and patient safety initiatives
Act as a chaperone as required
Ensure specimens are recorded and ready for onward transportation
Provide support during minor operations if required.
Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the organisations IPC Policy
Work within national and local protocols where these exist
Be aware of your duties and responsibilities regarding current legislation and adhere to practice policies and procedures on Safeguarding Adults and Safeguarding Children
Recognise the boundaries of their practice and know when and to whom patients should be referred
Support in the delivery of enhanced services and other service requirements
Support the administrative team on an as-required basis
Undertake all mandatory training and induction programmes
Maintain a clean, tidy, effective working area at all times
Attend a formal appraisal with their manager at least every 12 months. Once a performance/training objective has been set, progress will be reviewed on a regular basis so that new objectives can be agreed
Participate in any audits as directed
Participate in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care
Support and participate in shared learning
Complete opening and closing procedures if required.
Recognise emergency situations and act appropriately to seek assistance.
Deliver key elements of public health, health protection and promotion programmes as required that improve health and reduce inequalities.
Prioritise own workload, and act promptly and effectively to meet the regular unpredictable situations that may occur within the role.
Demonstrate flexibility.
Work closely with duty and on call teams, promptly responding to team priorities.
Lead by example and action in relation to behaviour, attitudes, conduct and appearance.
Report and investigate untoward incidents.
Work in close partnership with colleagues and external agencies, to develop care management plans to improve health outcomes.
Establish and monitor own practice, identifying auditable outcomes with the leadership team.
Maintain accurate patient records and enter onto SystmOne using agreed templates/Read Codes.
Maintain data collection systems and participate in audit.
