Job summary

  • Hold a Care Certificate issued by an NHS provider organisation (Care Certificate from NHS England or external training provider is not acceptable)
  • Or have completed an NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care from UK College. Certificates from outside the UK are unacceptable.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a senior Healthcare Assistant in the MBU Outpatient department at QEH. We are looking for a cheerful, conscientious and adaptable individual to join our busy department in providing essential clinical and administrative support .

The role primarily involves supporting patients attending clinics for assessment, review, and follow-up. HCAs assist with baseline clinical observations (e.g., vital signs, height & weight), patient preparation for consultations, and chaperoning during examinations where required. They will contribute to maintaining patient comfort, dignity, and emotional wellbeing, recognising the complex physical and psychological needs associated with cancer care.

Main duties of the job

A key aspect of the role is communication--welcoming patients, providing reassurance, and escalating concerns to managers or medical staff, particularly in relation to symptoms or deterioration.

Will act as a point of continuity for patients navigating outpatient services.

HCAs will support clinical workflows by preparing clinic rooms, stocking equipment, and ensuring infection prevention and control standards are met. They may assist with simple clinical tasks such as , specimen handling, and documentation within electronic patient record systems.

Job responsibilities

Welcoming patients, providing reassurance, and escalating concerns to managers or medical staff

They may assist with simple clinical tasks such as , specimen handling, and documentation within electronic patient record systems.

Assist patients to the toilet; assist with stoma bags, emptying catheters

Requesting on helpdesk e.g., food for patients, porters etc

Person Specification

Experience

Essential

  • Relevant experience working in a similar environment

Desirable

  • Keyboard/computer skills

Knowledge

Essential

  • Be able to carry out ECG recordings
  • Able to obtain patient vital signs and record accordingly

Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • Literacy and numeracy to secondary school standard or above
  • NVQ Level 3 in Health Care or equivalent experience
  • Phlebotomy Skills
