Job summary

The Healthcare Support Worker is a member of the ward/department team who implements prescribed care and/or undertakes some higher-level clinical activities as directed by a registered nurse.

The main dimensions of the role are:

  • To support the professionally qualified staff and work under their direction to provide quality nursing care, therapy activity, treatments and procedures directly to patients.
  • To lead and co-ordinate a range of clinical and non-clinical tasks and responsibilities
  • To support the ward and therapy department staff to provide a high quality service.

Main duties of the job

  • Assist with the maintenance of patient hygiene
  • Washing and bathing the patient in bed / at bedside and in bathroom, using hoists as appropriate
  • Care of patients mouth; give mouthwash, clean teeth and care of dentures
  • Care of hair washing in bathroom, combing and brushing
  • Care and cleaning of nails Assist with feeding of patients
  • Assist with patients to choose appropriate food and drink
  • Serving of patient meals and cleaning up afterwards
  • Assist individual patients with feeding
  • Report on patients intake and record on chart as appropriate
  • Preparation of beverages and water jugs as required

  • Assisting patients to use commodes
  • Cleaning commodes
  • Escort of patients to and from lavatory Care of incontinent patients Record outputs where appropriate
  • Collecting and testing urine samples

Person Specification

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working in an acute medical setting
  • Knowledge of confidentiality

Desirable

  • Awareness of Health and Safety.
  • Awareness of Clinical Risk
  • Knowledge of principles of speciality

Qualifications

Essential

  • NVQ 2/3 in Health and Social Care or equivalent.
  • GCSE grade A to C in English and Maths or equivalent

Desirable

  • First Aid Qualification
  • ECG
  • Venepuncture
  • Senior Health care Support worker Programme

Skills and Knowledge

Essential

  • Able to communicate in English
  • Proficient in reading and writing in the English language
  • Able to mentor and supervise other HCAs in the working environment
  • Attention to detail.
