Job summary
Role: Hospice Doctor (maternity cover)
Hours: 6 sessions (3 days a week) + 1:5 on-call per week
Contract: Fixed Term 9 months, maternity cover
Salary: £41,960 per annum (pro rata of £63,573 per annum)

As Hospice Doctor, you will provide high quality, evidence-based specialist palliative care to patients and their families with care, compassion and dignity. You will support colleagues who are managing palliative care patients both within the hospice and across the borough through the provision of specialist medical advice when needed.
The role is available on a fixed term basis, working 9am - 5pm, 3 days a week (6 PAs) plus 1 in 5 on-call.

Main duties of the job
In this role, you will provide high quality, evidence-based specialist palliative care to patients and their families with care, compassion and dignity. You will support colleagues who are managing palliative care patients both within the hospice and across the borough through the provision of specialist medical advice when needed. You will participate in the on-call rota providing 24 hour medical cover for the hospice, including the 24 hour specialist palliative care advice line.
Applicants must be fully registered with the GMC and hold a licence to practice, have at least 2 years post-registration experience, and demonstrate a strong interest in palliative & end of life care.
Interviews will take place on Thursday 13/08/2026.

Please note this role is not eligible for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker route of the Points Based System. Candidates will need to be able to demonstrate their right to work in the UK in order to be eligible to take up the post.

Personal Qualities & Attributes
Essential
- Demonstrates a strong interest in palliative & end of life care
- Acts in accordance with, and promotes, hospice values.
- Shows empathy, compassion, and sensitivity in patient care.
- Flexible and responsive to service needs.
- Able to attend the hospice within 45-60 minutes when on-call
Qualifications
Essential
- Recognised medical qualification (MBBS or equivalent)
- Full registration with the GMC and holding a licence to practise
- Minimum two years full-time post-registration experience (or equivalent gained on a less than full-time basis), including recent experience in relevant fields e.g. General Medicine, General Practice or Oncology
- Knowledge of drugs used in palliative care and prescribing for common end of life problems
Desirable
- MRCP/ MRCGP or equivalent
- Certificate or Diploma in Palliative Medicine
- Experience in Specialist Palliative Care
- Advanced communication skills training
- Up to date with current practices in Specialist Palliative Care
Skills & Abilities

- Evidence of relevant Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
- Strong written & verbal communication
- Effective time management and organisational skills.
- Sound clinical judgement and decision-making ability.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Competent IT skills, including Microsoft Office, electronic patient records (EPR), and electronic prescribing systems (ePMA).
- Driver with a valid license or ability to travel effectively to undertake required duties
