Management Accountant - Research Finance
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Management Accountant to join our dynamic and forward-thinking Financial Management team, supporting the Research Directorate. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated finance professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is keen to contribute to high-quality financial management and decision-making.
The successful candidate will bring a high level of commitment and enthusiasm, with strong time management skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work to tight deadlines. You will need to be flexible in your approach, able to prioritise competing demands, and confident working both independently and as part of a wider team. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential, as you will work closely with managers and colleagues at all levels across the Trust.
The finance team works to a hybrid pattern of three days per week in the office at the Wirral site and two days working from home.
Main duties of the job
Main duties of the job The post holder will play a key role within the Financial Management team, providing timely, relevant, and accurate financial information to support the Research Directorate. Provide high-quality management accounting support, including budget monitoring, forecasting, and monthly financial reporting. Coordinate key elements of the monthly reporting cycle, ensuring deadlines are met and information is accurate and complete. Undertake detailed analysis of income streams and expenditure to ensure costs are appropriately matched to funding sources and awards. Investigate and explain variances from agreed budgets, forecasts, and funding allocations, highlighting risks and opportunities where appropriate. Provide financial analysis, advice, and support to both the Financial Management team and Directorate teams to support decision-making. Work closely with budget holders and managers across the Trust, building effective working relationships and supporting financial understanding.

Qualifications
Essential
- 5 GCSEs A-C inclusing Maths & English
- NVQ 4 level in Accounting (AAT)
- CIMA or CCAB - Studying towards or equivalent experience
Desirable
- Graduate
- CIMA or CCAB qualified
Knowledge and Expertise:
Essential
- Proven track record providing accounting services within a large organisation
- Demonstrated numeracy and literacy skills.
- Computer literate to include spreadsheet, databases and in-depth financial knowledge
- Knowledge and experience of Integrated Financial systems
- Word & Excel skills, relevant IT experience
Desirable
- Knowledge of NHS VAT requirements
- In-depth financial knowledge gained through working in the NHS
