Job summary

We are looking for a friendly, organised and motivated Medical Receptionist to join our busy NHS General Practice team. As the first point of contact for our patients, you will play a key role in delivering an efficient, professional and compassionate reception and administrative service.

Main duties of the job

  • Welcome patients and visitors in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Answer telephone calls and respond to patient enquiries.
  • Book, amend and cancel appointments using the clinical system.
  • Signpost patients to the most appropriate healthcare professional or service.
  • Register new patients and update patient records accurately.
  • Process repeat prescription requests in line with practice procedures.
  • Handle incoming and outgoing correspondence.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with GDPR and NHS policies.
  • Support clinicians and the wider practice team with administrative tasks.
  • Ensure reception and waiting areas remain welcoming and well organised.

  • Person Specification

    Experience

    Essential

    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Strong customer service experience.
    • Good IT skills and confidence using computer systems.
    • Ability to prioritise workload and work accurately under pressure.
    • Professional, empathetic and approachable manner.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality at all times.

    Desirable

    • Previous experience working in a GP practice, NHS or healthcare setting.
    • Knowledge of EMIS Web or Docman.
    • Understanding of NHS services and patient pathways.
