Job summary

As MSE's Director of Quality and Clinical Governance you will be responsible for ensuring that appropriate governance arrangements exist to safeguard the quality of the systems & processes that contribute to the care of patients, can achieve & report on the Trust's performance against & oversight of, the Care Quality Commission standards and that a robust governance structure is in place for Ward to Board governance to allow detection, response & escalation of concerns. Acting as Executive Lead for Patient Engagement & Co-production, ensuring that patients, families, carers and communities are meaningfully involved in the design, delivery, monitoring and improvement of care.

As EPUT's Director of Safety & Patient Safety Specialist you will be responsible for leading patient safety across one of the largest mental health and community healthcare trusts in the region, shaping and delivering the Trust's strategic approach to safety and learning. You will be the lead patient safety expert in EPUT, providing dynamic senior leadership, visibility and expert support to the patient safety work across our organisation and leading the development of a patient safety culture and safety systems engaging directly with our Executive Team.

A critical factor to BOTH these roles is the relationship between yourself and our Chief Nurse/Executive Nurse, executives accountable to the Board of Directors for quality of care including, patient safety, clinical effectiveness & patient experience.

Main duties of the job

MSE Role - Working in partnership with all partners, you will be responsible for;o ensuring clinical quality improvements are embedded and sustained in practice with an effective clinical quality assurance framework providing internal/external assuranceo leading on the quality interface with external agencies/regulators such as the Trust's Commissionerso providing assurance that clinical quality is embedded at the local level by working in collaboration with hospital leadership and management teamso ensuring systems are in place to maximise opportunities for learning with patients and families and ensuring that a culture of learning from experience is supportedo providing expertise and leadership in the development of the Trusts clinical service and quality strategy

EPUT Role - As senior lead for patient safety, you will ;o act as our Trust's senior patient safety expert, providing visible leadership and influencing safety improvements at Board & Executive levelo drive meaningful engagement with patients, carers, staff and Patient Safety Partners to ensure lived experience informs service improvement and safety prioritieso provide strategic oversight of incidents, risks, complaints, PALS and patient experience to ensure lessons are identified, shared and translated into tangible improvementso lead and develop high-performing patient safety, complaints and patient experience functions, ensuring the delivery of national standards and best practice

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Relevant degree to Master's level or equivalent experience
  • Management/Leadership qualification at postgraduate level or relevant experience

Desirable

  • A relevant clinical qualification and registration

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Significant experience of Patient Safety, Clinical Governance & Risk Management at Board or sub-Board level
  • Experience of extensive senior managerial responsibility of multi-disciplinary working arrangements
  • Experience of developing innovative and creative relationships with key stakeholder organisations
  • Excellent understanding of NHS agenda particularly in field of Patient Safety, Governance and Risk Management
  • The ability to respond to critical and immediate changes of work priorities and demands
  • Strong ability to interpret national advice, guidance and requirements and advise how these should be implemented
  • Willing and committed to developing expertise in all aspects of patient safety science, such as human factors, systems thinking, investigation, quality improvement, change management, prospective and reactive risk analysis and management, error theory and just culture
  • Commitment to and proactive in addressing inequalities in healthcare in general and in patient safety in particular

  • Experience of detailed performance management

  • The capacity to absorb a variety of information and interpret quickly
  • Demonstrate a positive use of networking skills, with the ability to gain support for the Trust's Agenda
  • Experience of contributing to strategic agendas, both setting objectives in line with Government Policy and implementing initiatives to achieve them

  • A strong desire to work corporately and recognise responsibilities which cross both strategic and operational boundaries and actively work to promote the development of the Trust as a whole
  • The ability to withstand significant and unexpected pressure and challenge in a manner, which demonstrates high standards of personal integrity
  • Ability to travel across Trust sites as required with full UK Driver's license
